Job description

Join us in pioneering breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. Everywhere. Sustainably. Our inspiring and caring environment forms a global community that celebrates diversity and individuality. We encourage you to step beyond your comfort zone, offering resources and flexibility to foster your professional and personal growth, all while valuing your unique contributions.

Varian Medical Systems, a Siemens Healthineers company is hiring for a Sr Manufacturing Engineer - NPI and Automation for our site in Austin, TX.

This is a hands‑on technical leadership role focused on getting new products into manufacturing and making existing lines run better. You will define how products are built and tested - process flows, fixtures, tooling, and automated test systems - and carry that work from concept through qualification and production launch.

We're looking for a strong electro-mechanical engineer who has lived through NPI: someone who has written a URS, argued with a supplier over FAT results, and debugged a test fixture on the floor the night before a build.

You’ll partner daily with R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, Operations, and external suppliers, and you’ll set the technical direction for the engineers and technicians around you.

What You will do:
  • New Product Introduction & Design Transfer Lead manufacturing readiness and technology transfer for new products, from early design reviews through commercial launch and production ramp.
  • Define manufacturing requirements, process flows, fixtures, tooling, and test strategy.
  • Deliver DFM/DFA/DFT feedback early enough to change the design, not just document it.
  • Own PFMEAs and drive manufacturing risk mitigation to closure.
  • Define manufacturing test requirements and acceptance criteria with R&D, Systems Engineering, and Quality.
  • Support engineering builds, pilot builds, OQ/PQ builds, and production ramp‑up.
  • Lead root cause investigations with structured problem solving, make the corrective action, and monitor the effectiveness.
  • Equipment, Test Systems & Automation Develop manufacturing test equipment, fixtures, and automated systems from specification through qualification and release.
  • Manage external equipment suppliers end to end: requirements, vendor selection, design reviews, FAT/SAT, and equipment acceptance.
  • Identify and lead automation and capital projects that improve safety, quality, throughput, and cost - including building the justification and owning budget and schedule.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, software, and system-level issues on production and test equipment.
  • Support capacity expansion and scaling efforts.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians, and serve as the SME for manufacturing processes, test systems, and production equipment.
What You will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years in manufacturing, test, automation, or NPI engineering, including at least one product carried from development through commercial launch.
  • Hands‑on experience with electro-mechanical systems and manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience developing and qualifying manufacturing test methods and equipment.
  • Led at least one automation or capital equipment project of $200K or larger from concept through installation and acceptance - you’ve wrote the requirements before, selected the vendor, ran the FAT, and turned the equipment over to production.
  • Direct experience managing external automation or equipment vendors.
  • Hands‑on experience integrating machine vision systems (Keyence, Cognex, Omron, or equivalent) for in‑line inspection.
  • Working knowledge of DOE, statistical analysis, process capability, MSA, and Gage R&R.
What will set You apart:
  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Experience in the chemical, materials industries, process automation is desirable.
  • Experience with PLCs, motion control, sensors, and data acquisition, or vision‑based QA checks feeding MES or production data systems.
  • Medical device design transfer experience.
  • Experience in an FDA-regulated environment (ISO 13485, 21 CFR 820, or GMP).
  • Familiarity with MES, ERP, and manufacturing data systems.
  • Lean or Six Sigma certification.
