Job description

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond. Together, we advance your career.

THE TEAM:

AMD's Data Center GPU organization is transforming the industry with our AI-based Graphics Processors. Our primary objective is to design exceptional products that drive the evolution of computing, serving as the foundation for enterprise data centers, artificial intelligence (AI), HPC, and embedded systems. If this resonates with you, join our Data Center GPU organization where we are building cutting-edge AI-powered products with a world-class team.

THE ROLE:

As a technical individual contributor on the Instinct Technical Product Management Team for AMD’s Data Center GPU & Accelerated Processing business unit, you will help drive business-critical performance analysis, projections, and total cost of ownership (TCO) evaluation for AMD’s Instinct GPU product families. You will develop performance models and projections to guide product strategy, prepare technical guidance documents to inform product managers and influence product roadmaps, produce customer-facing collateral to enable deep technical engagement, and perform comprehensive competitive analysis on system performance, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.

THE PERSON:

We’re looking for experienced engineers excited about solving the world’s most challenging computing problems beyond rack scale. The right candidate seeks a deep understanding of “why” systems perform the way they do, with a strong emphasis on performance characterization, modeling, and optimization rather than solely focusing on implementation.

We need motivated self-starters with experience across domains critical to modern datacenter workloads, including performance analysis, workload characterization, system-level modeling, and cost-performance tradeoff analysis. Familiarity with AI/ML, HPC, and large-scale distributed systems is highly valuable. Your work will influence decisions across the stack—from silicon architecture to system design and software optimization—by quantifying performance and economic impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performance Analysis & Projections: Develop and maintain models to evaluate system and workload performance across diverse use cases. Generate forward-looking performance projections to guide product strategy, identify bottlenecks, and inform architectural and product tradeoffs.

TCO & Competitive Analysis: Develop total cost of ownership (TCO) frameworks that incorporate hardware, software, efficiency, utilization, and infrastructure considerations. Perform competitive benchmarking and analysis to position AMD solutions effectively in terms of performance-per-dollar and performance-per-watt.

Customer Engagement: Engage directly with leading Hyperscalers, CSPs, OEMs, and ODMs to understand workload characteristics, performance needs, and economic drivers. Collaborate to ensure alignment between customer requirements and AMD’s product direction.

Internal Advocacy: Synthesize performance insights, customer feedback, and industry trends into clear, compelling narratives that influence cross-functional teams, including architecture, engineering, and product management.

Industry Involvement: Participate in industry forums, benchmarking efforts, and technical conferences to stay current on workload trends, performance methodologies, and competitive positioning.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS & COMPETENCIES:

  • System-Level Thinking: Identifies root causes and trade-offs across hardware, software, and infrastructure

  • Performance & Cost Insight: Connects architectural decisions to real-world performance and TCO outcomes

  • Influence: Drives alignment across engineering, architecture, and product teams without direct authority

  • Customer Focus: Translates workload and hyperscaler needs into actionable product guidance

  • Clarity of Communication: Synthesizes complex analysis into clear, decision-oriented narratives

  • Ownership: Operates independently, driving ambiguous problems to concrete recommendations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (PhD preferred)

  • 5+ years in performance analysis, system architecture, or technical product management in datacenter, AI/ML, or HPC domains

  • Strong experience with system-level performance analysis (compute, memory, networking, storage)

  • Proficiency in performance modeling, benchmarking, and workload characterization

  • Experience with AI/ML and/or HPC workloads and large-scale distributed systems

  • Demonstrated ability to build and apply TCO models (performance-per-dollar, performance-per-watt)

  • Solid programming skills (e.g., Python, C++) for modeling and analysis

  • Proven ability to influence product or architecture decisions through data-driven insights

  • Strong cross-functional communication skills, including customer-facing engagement

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong experience in the data center/enterprise industry

  • Experience with one or more of the following:

    • Performance modeling, simulation, and benchmarking methodologies

    • AI/ML or HPC workload characterization and optimization

    • System-level performance analysis (compute, memory, networking, storage)

    • TCO modeling, cost-performance tradeoff analysis, and capacity planning

  • Experience working with large-scale distributed systems or hyperscale environments

  • Extensive experience providing technical leadership across cross-functional engineering teams

  • Proven track record of driving technical engagement with industry-leading datacenter customers

  • Demonstrated success in influencing product strategy through performance and economic analysis

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
