Job summary

RWE Americas, LLC is seeking an experienced Environmental Lead to manage permitting and compliance for a portfolio of renewable energy projects across multiple states. You will guide regulatory strategies, oversee NEPA and state reviews, and coordinate with engineering, legal, and construction teams to ensure timely and compliant project delivery.

The role requires a BS in a related field and at least 7 years of experience in energy/environmental programs, with strong leadership and stakeholder

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience with environmental programs including permitting and compliance in energy/renewables preferred.
  • Leads cross-functional teams and engages regulators, landowners, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on environmental regulations, permitting requirements, and compliance obligations for federal and state programs (NEPA/EA, BGEPA/ESA/MBTA, CWA, SPCC, RCRA, etc.).
  • Oversees environmental permitting from origination to late-stage, including strategies, schedules, and risk mitigation for project development timelines.
  • Manages consultants and staff delivering environmental assessments, field surveys, and permit applications with high quality deliverables.
  • Coordinates environmental reviews, NEPA processes, and agency coordination; leads cross-functional project support.
  • Drives process improvements, EMS development, and HSSE alignment; mentors staff and sets team OKRs and resource plans.

Functional area: Health, Safety & Environment; Project Development

Role Responsibilities
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on environmental regulations, permitting requirements, and compliance obligations for federal and state specific environmental programs, including but not limited to:
    • Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA) (i.e. NEPA, state level environmental review regulations, etc.)
    • Threatened and/or endangered species issues and take permits (i.e. BGEPA, ESA, MBTA, etc.)
    • Water and stormwater management for construction and operations (i.e. CWA, SWPPPs, etc.)
    • Chemical management, including spill prevention and control (i.e. EPCRA, SPCC, etc.)
    • Waste management (i.e. RCRA)
  • Collaborates with Project Development, Engineering, Legal, Construction, Operations, and external stakeholders to successfully ensure projects are evaluated for environmental permit applicability, successfully permitted as required, and constructed and operated in compliance with environmental regulations
  • Oversees Environmental personnel directly supporting a portfolio of renewable energy projects spanning Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and other states in the southern region
  • Leads environmental permitting both directly and through staff assignment from origination through late stage, including developing comprehensive permitting strategies, schedules, and risk mitigation plans to support project development timelines
  • Coordinates and oversees environmental reviews and permitting activities, including National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews, state environmental review processes, and associated agency coordination
  • Manages consultants conducting environmental assessments, field surveys, technical studies, and permit applications; evaluates consultant performance and ensures consistency and quality in deliverables across all projects under their team's scope
  • Identifies and leads process improvement initiatives such as digitalization of environmental data, template creation, or internal policy updates such as the development of selected elements of RWEA’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Supports the development and implementation of HSSE EMS in compliance with industry standards and best practices
  • Establishes team OKRs and performance expectations aligned with corporate and functional goals
  • Coordinates resource allocation and headcount planning to ensure environmental support scales with business growth
Job Requirements and Experiences
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Civil/Environmental Engineering or related area of study
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience with environmental programs, including environmental permitting and compliance, in the energy industry, with a focus in renewable energy preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with consulting, construction, and/or operations, including field work
  • Designs functional or regional environmental strategies
  • Guides team members in technical areas such as protected species assessments, mitigation plans, and regulatory documentation
  • Manages complex regional issues involving multiple jurisdictions and conflicting regulatory requirements
  • Creates and implements scalable, repeatable solutions
  • Leads cross-functional teams on development and construction projects; actively engages with regulators, landowners, and third-party stakeholders to resolve sensitive matters
  • Oversees multiple projects or teams within a region
  • Leads hiring, team performance management, resource planning, and process optimization initiatives
  • Ability to analyze environmental regulatory and permit language for developing implementation guidance
  • Ability to write environmental program documents to support protected species permitting
  • Knowledge of protected species and ability to communicate through written and verbal communication
  • Recognized expert in key environmental domains (e.g., wildlife, stormwater, waste management)
  • Develops enterprise-level tools and guidance
  • Leads resolution of high-stakes environmental risks; creates and evaluates alternative strategies
  • Partners with senior stakeholders across the organization; negotiates with regulatory bodies
  • Drives large-scale programs and complex cross-functional initiatives
  • Mentors peers and supports team development
  • Basic understanding of principles of people management and ability to provide positive and constructive feedback to multiple direct reports
  • Oversees staff performance management and OKRs and identifies training needs and resources for developing knowledge and skills
  • Working knowledge of company policies, organization, and available employee resources
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to manage customer relationships
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Teams
  • Strong leadership and communication, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deliverables
  • Ability to multi-task while working independently and as part of a team

Work Environment

This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWE Americas office and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time.
