Job summary

The Arkema Group in Grand Rapids, MI seeks a Senior Maintenance Technician to provide hands-on electrical and/or mechanical support, serve as site SME for PM and RWO systems, and coordinate maintenance planning, contractor oversight, and material requisitioning.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repair of equipment, project coordination with engineering, and ensuring safety and compliance in a manufacturing environment. Occasional on-call, with travel <5%.

Qualifications

• Must have 7+ years of manufacturing experience with strong mechanical, electrical/electronic, and/or industrial skills.
• Experience with rotating equipment, instrumentation/controls, and working in a hazardous environment preferred.
• Willing to advance in SAP and Microsoft Office; basic computer skills to support PM/WO systems.

Job Title

Senior Maintenance Technician

Position and reporting

Position reports directly to the Grand Rapids Maintenance & Engineering Improvement Supervisor. The Maintenance & Engineering Improvement Supervisor serves as this position's backup.

Job dimensions

This multifunctional role provides hands-on craft support in electrical and/or mechanical areas, serves as site SME for Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Repair Work Order (RWO) systems, and covers planning and execution of a broad spectrum of work including troubleshooting and repair of equipment. The role coordinates maintenance planning, contractor oversight, and supports department requisitioning activity, while issuing safe work permits (SWPs).

Responsibilities

1. Maintenance Planning — 25%
   • Coordinates and/or performs regular preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities; updates maintenance records and equipment history.
   • Works with Operations/Logistics Leaders to investigate and develop plans for repairs or other needs.
   • Delegates daily PM/repair tasks to team members with supervisory input as needed.
   • Plans and coordinates contractor PM and repair activity with supervisory guidance.
   • Monitors, issues, completes, and updates PM documentation; updates PMs and equipment in SAP as needed.
   • Monitors, issues, completes, and updates work order (WO) documentation per department and company prioritization.
2. Contractor/Service Coordination — 25%
   • Utilizes outside contractors and vendors to accomplish work objectives including projects.
   • Participates in and supports Safe Work Permit processes including permit issuance where authorized.
   • Coordinates with supervision for requisitions needed for maintenance materials and services.
   • Provides input to supervision for developing/executing material and services budgets.
3. Project Coordination — 20%
   • Works with own and other departments to develop scopes for small/medium site projects.
   • Coordinates execution of material acquisition and contractor implementation of projects.
   • Provides support to Engineering in specification, sourcing, and commissioning of equipment systems.
4. Electrical/Mechanical Support — 25%
   • Performs electro/mechanical tasks including troubleshooting and repair of production machines and related equipment; diagnoses problems, replaces/repairs parts, tests, and adjusts.
   • Reads and interprets equipment manuals and issues work orders; reads P&IDs, one-line drawings, electrical schematics and related information. NEC knowledge required if Electrical Qualified.
   • Uses hand and power tools, test meters, and other instruments; experience operating forklifts and/or aerial equipment.
   • Updates and modifies mechanical, instrumentation/electrical, and other procedures as necessary.
   • Provides emergency/unscheduled repairs and scheduled maintenance during planned outages; participates in on-call rotation.
5. Other Duties — 5%
   • Ensures workplace safety by conducting safety observations and reviews; adheres to safety regulations and procedures.
   • Supports all relevant health, safety, and environmental initiatives.
   • Maintains clean and orderly work areas; provides technical support for part specification, identification, and sourcing.
   • Contributes to root cause investigations and cross-functional analyses; handles hazardous waste per applicable regulations and completes related training.
   • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Context and environment

This position will be based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Maintenance work may require confined-space coordination, working at heights, respirator use, outdoor work, etc. Occasional evening and weekend response is required. Travel is less than 5%.

Supports the site HES policy and complies with regulatory and internal requirements. Participates in health, environment, and safety (HES) activities and promotes reporting of health, safety, environmental, near-miss, or incident events.

Required Education/Qualifications / Work experience

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of a craft apprenticeship or equivalent experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or instrumentation, preferably in a manufacturing setting.
• If electrical background, documentation must rate the incumbent as Electrical Qualified (Certified Electrician or Master Electrician).
• 7+ years of manufacturing experience with strong mechanical, electrical/electronic, and/or industrial skills.
• Experience with rotating equipment, instrumentation/controls, and working in a hazardous environment preferred.
• Experience with digital/analog computer interfacing, and/or VFD/device programming is a plus.
• Basic or higher computer skills to support PM and maintenance work request systems and requisitioning; willingness to advance in SAP and Microsoft Office.
• Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds; heavier lifting may be required.
• Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding, or powered lifts when required.
• Must be a highly motivated team player who can work independently and at a fast pace when necessary.
• Must be willing to collaborate with other departments to achieve common goals.

Demonstrated Competencies

Responsible for upkeep of site PM and WO programs, support of department requisitioning, small project execution, and oversight of contractor activity including work permitting. Also responsible for performing diversified mechanical, electrical, and/or instrumentation duties to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain production and facility equipment in alignment with safety, predictive, and preventive maintenance processes.
