Job summary

Greif is seeking a Sr. Maintenance Mechanic – Steel in La Porte, Indiana. The role focuses on preventive maintenance and repair of steel production machinery, including mechanical, electrical, PLC, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or technical training with 5+ years of relevant experience, strong problem-solving, and the ability to read schematics. English is required, bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Ensure reliability of machinery and equipment by completing preventive maintenance on systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, PLC, pneumatic, and hydraulic components.
• Read and interpret manuals, diagrams, and engineering specifications; follow work orders.
• Manage work orders in the eMaint CMMS and report executed tasks.
• Provide guidance to junior maintenance colleagues and uphold safety policies.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure reliability of machinery and equipment by completing preventive maintenance on systems.
• Perform mechanical, electrical, PLC, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
• Read and interpret equipment manuals, diagrams, sketches, engineering specifications, and work orders.
• Use hand tools and measuring instruments to determine dimensional changes and tolerances.
• Define mechanical clearance and tolerances between shaft, bearings, and couplings.
• Conduct root‑cause analysis for major breakdowns.
• Assemble, install, adjust, and calibrate mechanical and electrical machinery and equipment; dismantle, repair, rebuild, and replace parts as needed.
• Adhere to all plant safety policies and participate in safety, housekeeping, Operational Excellence, and Lean Manufacturing programs.
• Provide assistance and guidance to junior maintenance colleagues.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Manage work orders on the eMaint platform to report all executed tasks.
• Perform preventive maintenance and propose improvements for task execution.
• Expertise in pneumatic and hydraulic circuits; read and interpret circuits for troubleshooting and part replacement.
• Expertise in various bearing types and their mechanical applications.
• Rebuild gearboxes and pneumatic clutches.
• Replace servo motors.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma (or equivalent) or technical training (associate’s degree) in an industrial-related field such as Industrial Maintenance, Millwright, or Mechatronics Technician, and 5+ years of relevant experience.

Knowledge and Skills

• Ability to select and operate appropriate hand, power, and specialty tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Operational knowledge of automated industrial machinery and electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and work orders.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and effective communication of issues and solutions to team members.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
• Capability to troubleshoot, disassemble, and reassemble manufacturing equipment.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively under limited supervision.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other relevant software.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
• Basic electrical knowledge (multimeter use): familiarity with 480 VAC 3‑phase motors, replacement of contactors, fuses, and breakers.
• Familiarity with machine manuals and drawings for preventive maintenance and part ordering.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Familiarity with maintenance concepts (Corrective, Predictive, and Preventive).
• Experience working on drum manufacturing is a plus.
• Experience with CMMS software.

Compensation Range

The pay for this position is $39.34 per hour. The position may also be eligible for a short‑term incentive.
