Sr. Maintenance Lead
The Opportunity
  • Sr. Maintenance Lead at a downstream growth-oriented energy company.
  • The Sr. Maintenance Lead is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of complex refinery maintenance activities. Working with minimal guidance from the Maintenance Supervisor, this individual serves as a critical technical resource, leads assigned projects, coordinates the work of employees and contractors, and provides coaching and mentoring to less experienced team members. The Sr. Maintenance Lead is expected to remain actively involved in fieldwork while helping the team troubleshoot problems, prioritize work, and meet refinery expectations for safety, quality, and productivity. This position includes both administrative and field-based responsibilities. The Sr. Maintenance Lead will routinely enter operating units, work alongside maintenance personnel, provide technical guidance and training, coordinate with other departments, and promptly elevate significant safety, equipment, staffing, or scheduling concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
  • When business needs require, this position may be formally assigned supervisory uplift responsibilities to provide temporary coverage and support for the Maintenance Supervisor. This is a safety-sensitive position within a 24-hour industrial refinery environment.
Key activities include:
Safety Leadership
  • Promote and model compliance with OSHA requirements, refinery safety rules, established procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Participate in and assist with daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, pre-job planning, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) reviews.
  • Verify that Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, line breaking, and other applicable safe work procedures are understood and properly followed.
  • Safely and proficiently use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and supplied-air respirators (SAR) for supplied-air work and backup or rescue operations.
  • Identify field hazards, take appropriate immediate action, and exercise stop-work authority when work cannot be performed safely.
  • Conduct safety observations, communicate findings, and support timely corrective action.
  • Ensure employees and contractors use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established refinery safety expectations.
  • Promptly report and elevate significant safety concerns, procedural issues, or unsafe conditions to the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
  • Lead by example by demonstrating personal accountability for safety, quality, housekeeping, and environmental compliance.
Technical Leadership & Expert Oversight
  • Serve as a technical lead on assigned maintenance projects by evaluating the scope of work, breaking complex work into manageable tasks, identifying required resources, and coordinating activities as appropriate.
  • Remain a hands-on member of the Maintenance team while providing technical direction, coaching, mentoring, and field support to other employees.
  • Work alongside maintenance personnel to demonstrate proper techniques, support safe execution, and provide hands-on training.
  • Demonstrate the safe and proper use of common maintenance hand tools, power tools, torque equipment, alignment tools, precision measuring instruments, and other equipment necessary to perform or verify maintenance work.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support for rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, piping systems, valves, heat exchangers, fin fans, and structural components.
  • Verify proper rigging practices, load handling, lifting methods, and safe equipment placement.
  • Lead or provide technical oversight for heat exchanger and fin fan work, including bundle removal and replacement, cleaning, bolt-up, plugging leaking tubes, and rolling bundle tubes.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of refinery units, equipment, processes, and utility systems, including the ability to develop block-style process flow diagrams (PFDs).
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of chemicals and systems associated with pretreatment, product treatment, loading racks, product pipelines, boilers, deaerators, cooling water, and the refinery flare system.
  • Track, troubleshoot, and manage steam and glycol circuits based on seasonal conditions, process requirements, and operating needs.
  • Identify equipment reliability concerns, recurring maintenance issues, and opportunities to improve work practices or equipment performance.
  • Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition throughout the job and upon completion.
  • Communicate equipment concerns, changes in work scope, resource limitations, or other issues that may affect safety, quality, schedule, or refinery operations.
Planning, Coordination & Teaching
  • Assist with coordinating daily and weekly maintenance activities, reviewing work priorities, and sequencing assigned work to support refinery needs.
  • Review work scope, job plans, required permits, tools, materials, equipment, and staffing needs before work begins.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, planners, and other team members when work priorities, schedules, or resource needs change.
  • Provide clear technical guidance and confidently teach maintenance tasks and safe work practices to less experienced employees.
  • Coach and mentor employees to strengthen their technical knowledge, troubleshooting skills, safety performance, accountability, and overall job proficiency.
  • Support employee development through hands-on instruction, knowledge sharing, and constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Inspection, Reliability, Warehouse, and other departments to plan and safely execute routine maintenance, shutdowns, startups, turnarounds, and special projects.
  • Coordinate and monitor contractor field activities within the assigned scope to help ensure work is performed safely and in accordance with refinery requirements.
  • Communicate work progress, equipment status, delays, and follow-up needs to affected departments and leadership.
  • Promptly elevate safety concerns, equipment problems, employee concerns, resource limitations, scheduling conflicts, or other significant issues to the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
  • Support clear communication and effective handoffs between shifts, departments, and work groups.
Administrative & Computer Proficiency
  • Maintain accurate and timely maintenance records in SAP, including reviewing work order queues, filtering and updating orders, entering work notifications, and documenting completed work.
  • Review and close work orders, ensuring labor, materials, equipment, failure information, and other required details are coded and documented correctly.
  • Verify that work completed, follow-up needs, equipment conditions, and outstanding concerns are clearly documented.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and email effectively for internal and external communication, reporting, documentation, and planning.
  • Review technical information, maintenance procedures, equipment history, job plans, drawings, and other documents needed to support work activities.
  • Communicate work status, equipment concerns, schedule impacts, and recommend follow-up actions to the appropriate employees and leadership.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation for shift changes, project handoffs, equipment repairs, and maintenance planning.
  • Promptly report and elevate significant safety, equipment, personnel, scheduling, or resource concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
Supervisory Uplift Responsibilities

When formally assigned supervisory uplift responsibilities, the Senior Maintenance Technician will continue to serve as a hands‑on member of the Maintenance team while providing temporary day‑to‑day leadership and coordination.

  • Coordinate and provide day‑to‑day direction for assigned maintenance employees and work activities.
  • Communicate work priorities, performance expectations, safety requirements, and changes in work scope.
  • Work alongside employees in the field while providing coaching, mentoring, technical guidance, and hands‑on support.
  • Monitor work progress and make appropriate adjustments to staffing, sequencing, or work assignments within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Provide employees with timely and constructive performance feedback and communicate significant performance or conduct concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
  • Address routine concerns within the scope of the assignment and promptly elevate matters requiring additional authority, support, or management action.
  • Support safe shutdown, startup, turnaround, emergency response, and unplanned outage activities.
  • Coordinate with Operations and other departments to respond to changing refinery priorities and operational needs.
  • Help ensure completed work meets refinery expectations for safety, quality, documentation, housekeeping, and timely execution.
  • Support employee onboarding, training, qualification, skills development, and workforce‑development activities.
  • Participate in the hiring and selection process when requested by management.
  • Lead by example and promote a work environment centered on safety, teamwork, accountability, respect, and continuous improvement.
