Job Overview
The M&E Estimator provides direct support to the Preconstruction and Operations group through quantity takeoffs, subcontractor buyouts, and budgeting from conceptual to construction documents, focusing on M&E trades.
Responsibilities
- Interface directly with architects and engineers as required.
- Develop estimates and proposals for bid opportunities.
- Perform quantity take-offs and generate estimates.
- Prepare comprehensive conceptual budgets and accurate job cost proposals including T&M, lump sum, and design-build bid packages.
- Participate in bid solicitation and subcontractor selection.
- Identify plan discrepancies and opportunities for value engineering.
- Negotiate with subcontractors and vendors.
- Maintain relationships with local subcontractors and vendors for ongoing negotiations and future bids.
- Assist in other duties as assigned relevant to the achievement of the position’s and team’s objectives.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of construction methods and project execution.
- Ability to read construction plans and specifications, and calculate costs using labor, material pricing schedules, and historical data.
- Practical knowledge of all construction trades, emphasizing M&E components.
- Mathematical acuity for creating cost models.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong organization to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Experience with WinEst, Accubid or similar estimating systems.
- Experience with Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, BuildingConnected.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as per Fortis policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Cost Engineering degree and/or certifications are a plus).
- 2+ years of M&E construction experience.
Physical Requirements
- Work in a professional office environment; stationary, standing or sitting for long periods.
- Use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers.
- Communication with internal and external contacts is required.
- May occasionally push, pull or lift up to 25 lbs.
Travel Requirements
- All Fortis positions require some level of driving.
