Job summary

Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute invites applications for a Sr. Instructional Technologist to lead instructional technology support for online and hybrid courses across music, dance, and performing arts.

Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Instructional Technologist who will lead in the support and delivery of online and technology-facilitated courses. This position will provide primary instructional technology support for course and eLearning creation and related resource development including audio and video components, web assets, and training materials for faculty, staff, and students. This role will help mentor an instructional technology team, providing guidance and vision on technology development and adoption, training and support, and course development and delivery. This position will be highly focused on the user support and administration side of course delivery but will partner very closely with the instructional technologists maintaining the core learning technology infrastructure.

The Senior Instructional Technologist serves as a senior learning technology consultant and technical resource within the Peabody Institute’s Learning Innovation team, supporting teaching and learning across the Conservatory and Preparatory. The position partners directly with faculty and colleagues to explore, implement, and support instructional technologies within Peabody’s unique music, dance, and performing arts environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise instructional technologists, contractors, and student workers.
  • Provide instructional technology guidance to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Maintain and improve upon the instructional technology infrastructure including the daily operation, use, and configuration of video streaming platform, learning management system, and relevant licenses for course production and delivery.
  • Lead internal faculty and student support for 700-level master’s courses, undergraduate and graduate courses, initiatives with other centers, and MOOC and non-credit courses.
  • Perform a quality assurance review of all courses being developed to ensure adherence to internal standards.
  • Conduct regular faculty trainings on instructional technology tools and services
  • Manage equipment inventory for multimedia and course production.
  • Manage project specific budgets.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers and multimedia technicians in the design and development of a sustainable and engaging learning experiences.
  • Help produce live events.
  • Lead the piloting and testing of innovative instructional technology tools and services
  • Manage course copies.
  • Develop communication for faculty and students.
  • Lead the support infrastructure for faculty engaged in the delivery of learning and students in accessing relevant resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties described above

  • Lead the piloting, testing, and implementation of emerging instructional technologies, including artificial intelligence and other technologies with potential applications in music, dance, and performing arts education.
  • Support the operation, configuration, and effective use of Peabody’s instructional technology ecosystem, including the Canvas Learning Management System, integrated learning tools, course-authoring platforms, and multimedia technologies.
  • Lead faculty training and develop clear technical documentation, job aids, and other resources that translate complex technologies into accessible and practical guidance for faculty, staff, and students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or a related field.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex technology problems, evaluate potential solutions, and communicate technical concepts clearly to users with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with higher education faculty and staff.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting technology-enabled classrooms.
  • Experience managing technology projects.
  • Experience administering or providing advanced support for Canvas LMS and related instructional technologies, such as Articulate 360/Rise, Panopto, and LTI-integrated learning tools.

Technical Qualifications & Specialized Certifications

  • Experience as administrator in a user support/customer experience platform
  • System admin experience with an LMS and video platform
  • Demonstrated technology skills and ability - experience with the major learning management systems, digital audio and video production, graphic design (preferably Adobe CC), and issue and project tracking using a task management platform
  • Familiarity with SCORM, LTI, and RESTful APIs
  • Functional ability in HTML and CSS
