Job description

Sr. HVAC Engineer (Critical Infrastructure)

Join to apply for the Sr. HVAC Engineer (Critical Infrastructure) role at SpaceX.

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is exploring the stars is more exciting than one where we are not. Today, SpaceX is actively developing technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

Role Overview: As a member of the construction and infrastructure team, you will design, build, and activate some of the world’s most technically advanced manufacturing facilities. You will be the subject matter expert on all HVAC, compressed air, piping, dust collection, and other critical fluid systems at HQ. You will leverage your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop innovative solutions at the forefront of space technology. Responsibilities include design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of fluid system components. You will collaborate with construction engineers, architects, and internal customers to support these initiatives and drive global impact, ultimately contributing to humanity's multiplanetary future. This position is based in Hawthorne, CA.

Responsibilities
  • Own and be the subject matter expert on fluid/HVAC components across campus – compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and dust collection systems.
  • Perform CAD modeling and design of these systems.
  • Conduct fluid analyses for pressure balance, component design allowable, and consumables determination.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure components meet requirements across production, avionics, GNC, mission operations, and other programs.
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and reliable; work with the production team to facilitate smooth transition to reliable manufacturing processes with minimal engineering sustainment.
  • Support material selection, sizing, and procurement processes.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional experience with fluids components such as valves, pumps, COPVs, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure transducers, or temperature sensors.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with liquid and/or gas handling systems.
  • Experience with data acquisition, test instrumentation, and control components (pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, relays).
  • Experience with HVAC systems and air ducting.
  • Proficiency in NX or other CAD software, with understanding of GD&T per ASME Y14.5-1994 and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with structural analysis to optimize hardware strength, evaluate for life and fracture, and with pressurized or lightweight aerospace structures.
  • Ability to work independently.
Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $125,000 - $175,000 per year. Actual salary will depend on experience, skills, and education. Benefits include stock options, bonuses, comprehensive medical/dental/vision coverage, 401(k), disability and life insurance, paid parental leave, paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.

ITAR Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or otherwise authorized to work under U.S. export regulations.
