Job summary

Rivian in Southern California seeks a Test Engineer to design and develop automated PCBA test stations and in-house electrical test equipment. You will collaborate with automation engineers to improve end-of-line and validation testing for inverters, onboard chargers, and DC fast chargers, contributing across hardware and software interfaces.

The role requires 3+ years in test equipment design, HV electronics, schematics with Altium/AutoCAD Electrical, PXI/cDAQ, and LabVIEW, plus hands-on

Qualifications

  • 3+ years' experience designing unit or circuit board functional test equipment.
  • 3+ years' experience designing test equipment for electronics; high-voltage power electronics preferred.
  • Ability to create schematics using Altium and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Familiarity with modular test instruments and NI PXI/cDAQ.
  • Knowledge of RS232, CAN, GPIB, Ethernet, USB protocols.
  • Hands-on diagnosing and troubleshooting with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with environmental test setups and test error proofing.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced development environment.
  • Self-motivated with leadership ability.
  • PCB design experience preferred; LabVIEW programming a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom electronic test equipment for validation, end-of-line, and production testing of inverters, onboard chargers, DC fast chargers, and other in-house electrical products.
  • Design and develop functional test equipment for PCBA.
  • Document test equipment designs via electrical wiring schematics.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to align test equipment with software and hardware requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, requirement reviews, DFMEAs, PFMEAs and Hazard Analyses.
  • Direct prototype lab personnel during fabrication of test equipment.
  • Develop test procedures and define setup requirements and instructions.
  • Perform data analysis and generate reports.
  • Utilize standard test equipment: power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, power analyzers.
  • Use sensors such as thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure gauges, and flow meters.
  • Support root cause analysis and resolution of issues found during testing.

Role Summary

As a Test Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in the hardware design and development of automated PCBA and unit-level test stations. This includes designing specialized test equipment for a range of power electronic equipment, such as inverters, onboard chargers, and DC fast chargers. You'll collaborate with automation engineers to automate end-of-line and validation test equipment, and you'll also contribute to the continuous improvement of our test stations for future programs.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop custom electronic test equipment to support validation, end of line, and production testing of inverters, on board chargers, DC fast chargers, and other inhouse electrical products.
  • Design and develop functional test equipment for printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA).
  • Document test equipment designs via electrical wiring schematics.
  • Work closely with the engineering project teams to ensure test equipment designs align with the software and hardware requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, requirement reviews, DFMEAs, PFMEAs and Hazard Analyses.
  • Direct activities of prototype build lab personnel during fabrication of the test equipment.
  • Develop test procedures defining specific test setup requirements and instructions.
  • Perform data analysis and generate reports.
  • Utilize standard electronic test equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators and power analyzers.
  • Use sensors such as thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure gauges, and flow meters.
  • Support technical root cause analysis and resolution of issues found during testing.
Qualifications
  • BS in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years' experience designing unit or circuit board functional test equipment.
  • 3+ years' experience designing test equipment for electronics. High-voltage power electronics preferred.
  • Ability to create schematics using design software tools such as Altium and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Familiarity with modular test instruments and National Instruments I/O Systems (PXI, cDAQ)
  • Knowledge of and experience with computer hardware, communication, and bus protocols (RS232, CAN, GPIB, Ethernet, USB).
  • Hands-on experience with diagnosing and troubleshooting complex issues with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with environmental test setups and test error proofing.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment.
  • Self-motivated: Demonstrated ability to set direction and guide the team towards it.
  • PCB design experience preferred
  • Programming ability in LabVIEW is a plus.
Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is USD 121,500-151,900 for Southern California based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus and equity awards.
