Job Overview – As an Amazon Robotics Sensor Technology Leader, you will develop innovative hardware designs for our emerging robotic systems and improve existing hardware to optimize performance and enhance customer experience.
The ideal candidate has experience designing and analyzing camera systems, enjoys analytical problem solving, possesses practical knowledge of high volume manufacturing methods and is a role model for engineering best practices. This role will be a leader and expert in the development of complex camera, compute and machine vision modules. This position reports directly to the Hardware Development Engineering Manager.


Key job responsibilities
The Hardware Development Engineer will be responsible for:

  1. Technically leading an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including requirements, specification, design, prototyping, validation and testing.
  2. Supporting the architecture development and path to implementation for complex camera, compute or machine vision modules.
  3. Collaborating with other cross-functional teams and customers on new product introduction or technology development.
  4. Working with the Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Quality organizations as well as vendors to ensure a smooth product launch and sustaining.
  5. Writing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures.
  6. Complete engineering analysis and cradle to grave ownership.
  7. Design and support hardware solutions.
  8. Develop requirements.
  9. Developing engineering artifacts following hardware development best practices.
  10. Providing expertise to cross-functional team members and across the business in the area of sensing technologies.
  11. Acting as a trusted technical leader able to provide advisement to stakeholders.
  12. Providing input for sensor strategy and roadmap.
  13. Technical mentorship.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- BS / MS Electrical, Mechanical or Optical Engineering (or similar field).
- 8+ years of experience in mechanical, electrical and system level design.
- Thorough understanding of technical principles and concepts in hardware development.
- Ability to lead the design, implementation, and delivery of hardware in highly ambiguous problem spaces, that have long-term impact on a major product or system architecture.
- Ability to actively recruit for Amazon as well as participate in the hiring/interview process.
- Experience mentoring and developing younger engineers.
- Ability to “Think Big” and help set direction and guidance for technology development.
- Ability to lead a multidisciplinary technical team.
- Experience working with 3rd party engineering service providers.
- Ability to tackle intrinsically hard problems.
- Able to apply judgment and experience to balance trade-offs between competing interests.
- Provide flexible approaches to meet the needs of the team, project, and product.
- Expert in sensing and compute technologies.
- Expert in engineering tools such as CAD and Analytical tools.
- Expertise in engineering best practices.
- Experience designing complex hardware products to include machine vision and compute products.
- Expertise in DFX design best practices.
- Extensive system design interfacing to a wide array of electro-mechanical subsystems and debugging experience.
- Expertise in testing practices and design process flows.

- Excellent written (white papers) and oral communication skills.
- Ability to support domestic and international travel as required by the program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Optical Engineering (or similar field).
- Experience with sensor modalities (time-of-flight, stereo, RGB, mmWave radar, LiDAR) is highly desirable.
- Experience designing for IEC 60204 and/or IEC 61508 machinery safety standards preferred.
- Experience designing, developing and certifying safety rated systems is desirable.
- Experience with the project management of technical projects a plus.
- Experience troubleshooting and resolving EMI/EMC issues.
- Proficient with Matlab and PSPICE.
- Experience with Zemax or similar analytical tools.
