Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Food Services Manager who will provide the day-to-day vision, planning, direction, for three residential operations on Homewood and Peabody campuses with a focus on student satisfaction and engagement, quality execution and service. They will work closely with the Campus Culinary team in development and execution of menus.


Work in collaboration with the Executive Director of Operations and Marketing to promote and execute innovative programing and engagement with students. Work closely with the marketing team to develop a marketing plan for each semester that includes the promotion of special events and highlights the value of the residential experience.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Operations (60%)
  • Leads all daily residential operations on campus and will be responsible for managing and supporting the residential operational team.
  • Oversees all operational and financial management at Hopkins Café, Nolan’s on 33rd and Peabody Institute residential locations and partners with the Residential Executive Sous Chef.
  • Provides direction and support for the Residential managers, Residential Chefs, and Team Leaders.
  • Manages team of 175 bargaining unit employees.
  • Manages 3 location managers/chef managers, 3 residential sous chefs, 20 Team Leaders.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with students, campus constituents and dining team members.
  • Works in partnership with Student Advisory committees, including but not limited to Student Advisory, Real Food on Campus, Sustainability and the Plant Forward groups, and Student Government.
  • Respond and assist in any student and parent service issue.
  • Ensures team members have the tools necessary to complete their jobs.
  • Ensures show quality standards are maintained at all times.
  • Supports and communicates University initiatives.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Culinary Innovation and Campus Executive Chef to develop menus, promotions and programming.
  • Work with the Marketing Director to create and execute the residential marketing initiatives.
  • Assist Employee Labor Relations with managing hourly staff as aligned with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Ensures each residential location physical plant and equipment is maintained and in good working conditions while working closely with the department of facilities and real estate.
  • Work closely with Executive Director of Operations and campus partners in evaluating and managing new and existing contractor partnerships to include but not limited to contractual labor agency, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • In conjunction with the Campus Culinary team, manages expected culinary performance outcomes for three residential operations.
  • Work closely in the development and performance expectations for culinary managers assigned to residential operations across both campuses.
  • Ensures the digital technology in all residential locations is being used as planned and audited as required.
  • Creates and manages the academic and summer operations calendar for residential operations and works with the marketing team to ensure the website is up to date.

Finance (10%)

  • Collaborates with the Executive Director of Operations and Finance Manager on the operating budget.
  • Responsible for the financial outcomes of the three Residential locations, encompassing $19M in revenue.
  • Ensures cost controls are in place and being adhered to across three residential locations.
  • Oversees completion of required department reports.

Controls (20%)

  • Ensures that all security, safety and sanitation standards are achieved.
  • Employs good safety and sanitation practices.
  • Oversees control of all residential inventories, product cost, and purchasing.

Leadership and Internal Relationship Building (10%)

  • Uses engagement strategies to recognize, motivate and celebrate individuals and teams delivering outstanding performance throughout location.
  • Promotes a cooperative work climate, maximizing productivity and morale.
  • Interviews, hires, trains and develops team members according to Dining Standards.
  • Displays a positive attitude towards team members.
  • Mentors department management to develop their skills and leadership abilities.
  • Develops systems and process that ensures all operational processes are executed in an organized and timely manner.
  • Develops Team Leaders with support and tools to be successful and prepared for the next level.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience food service and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • An understanding of managing dining staff in a union environment.
  • Managing the service and repair of food service facilities and equipment.
  • ServSafe certification is required and must be obtained within three months of employment if not currently held.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: Min $55,200 - Max $96,600 Annually ($65,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
