Job summary

Amtrak’s Sr. Engineer Track Standards role oversees development of special trackwork design, Track Material Standards, and standard plans. Coordinates with Electric Traction, Signals and Communications, and Structures to support maintenance and renewal of track infrastructure.

The position requires leading condition-based evaluations, creating 5-10 year replacement programs, and coordinating with procurement for updated material requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent experience; 6 years relevant experience required
  • 8+ years of relevant experience preferred
  • Experience in design, construction, and installation of Trackwork
  • Knowledge of Bentley MicroStation for track design
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineering License within 3 years
  • Understanding of passenger and freight railroad operating environments

Responsibilities

  • Develops, modifies and updates Track standard plans, Engineering Practices and Track Materials standard plans.
  • Reviews and approved vendor drawings of track materials and special trackwork.
  • Evaluate, as the System Track Engineering representative, the condition of all trackwork components on a regular basis.
  • Develops replacement program for interlockings and yards from evaluation data.
  • Provides Material Control and Procurement with updated material needs and new material requirements.
  • Provide technical support to Division and Production forces.
  • Develops and updates SAP descriptions.
  • Manages third party inspection contracts.

Job Summary

The Sr. Engineer Track Standards position is responsible for development of special trackwork design, Track Material Standards, Track Standard Plans and Engineering Practices. Coordinates Special Trackwork design with their Engineering counterparts in Electric Traction, Signals and Communications and Structures. Provides technical resources for the Division and Production Personnel in the maintenance and renewal of track infrastructure. Performs Special Trackwork, State of Good Repair evaluations, to develop a condition based five- and ten-year replacement program. Works closely with Material Control and Procurement to provide safety stock needs, updated standard plans and new material requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Develops, modifies and updates Track standard plans, Engineering Practices and Track Materials standard plans.
  • Reviews and approved vendor drawings of track materials and special trackwork.
  • Evaluate, as the System Track Engineering representative, the condition of all trackwork components on a regular basis for problem areas. Evaluate conditions and define condition ratings. Act in the role of team leader when a team is required to conduct this evaluation or any other designated track-related evaluations.
  • Develops replacement program for PSNY, WUT, interlockings and yards from condition evaluation data compiled during State of Good Repair evaluations.
  • Provides Material Control and Procurement with updated material needs and new material requirements.
  • Provide technical support to Division and Production forces.
  • Develops and updates SAP descriptions.
  • Manages third party inspection contracts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Plus,
  • 6 years of prior relevant experience required
  • 8+ years of relevant experience preferred
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Master’s Degree
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Understanding of both passenger and freight railroad operating environments.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Engineer in Training Certificate
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineering License within 3 years.
  • Experience in design, construction, and installation of Trackwork.
  • Full proficient in using Bentley MicroStation for track design.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Qualified in MW1000, RWP, AMT II, and any other applicable Amtrak and FRA rules and regulations.
  • 6-9 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, collaborative and relationship building skills with demonstrated experience both within and outside an organization.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work autonomously to identify, troubleshoot and develop solutions for project-specific challenges.
Work Environment
  • Travel up to 25%, nationwide.
  • Valid driver’s license required

The target salary for this role is $122,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
