Objectives of this Role:
- Lead the mechanical and thermal design of spaceflight instrumentation development.
- Oversee design work, mechanical/thermal interface definition, conduct analyses, produce fabrication drawings, oversee fabrication and assembly activities.
- Develop assembly procedures for space flight hardware. This will require familiarity with spaceflight components outside their discipline.
- Mentor junior staff and teach them best practices as well as on-the-job learned skills.
- Assist potential principal investigators in the development of proposals from small instrument developments to full mission design.
- Serve as a reviewer for proposals within SwRI to ensure the highest probability of success.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Develop and oversee assembly, integration, and test of EUV instruments.
- Review documents and ensure interface control documents are complete.
- Review verification and EIDPs for completeness.
- Develop detail designs and analysis of flight instrumentation and oversee the fabrication and assembly of those designs.
- Analysis of mechanical and thermal models for space flight hardware in a variety of environments.
- Develop relevant engineering processes and ensure SwRI policies are followed.
Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. Advanced degrees will be considered in lieu of some years of experience.
- 25 years: Experience with space systems, instruments, and vehicles. Experience creating assembly procedures for complex space systems.
- 20 years: Thermal system modeling, design and implementation of thermal solutions.
- 5 years: Setting engineering design principles, best practices, and requirements for an organization.
- 5 years: Experience with UV missions such as FUSE, HST/COS, ALICE, UVS, or GALEX.
- A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado. Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
