Job summary

NV Energy in Las Vegas is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to deliver comprehensive design services for substation and transmission facilities, ensuring projects meet schedule and budget targets.

The role includes sitework planning, foundations, and enclosures, as well as transmission line analyses up to 230kV. Requires a Bachelor's in Engineering and a PE license (or 8+ years as a practicing engineer). Travel up to 25% of work hours within Nevada.

Qualifications

Job description

Basic Purpose

Provides comprehensive civil/structural engineering design services for substation and/or transmission facilities, and to ensure that these facilities are constructed on schedule and within committed resource allocations.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• For substation and transmission projects:
  • Provides civil engineering expertise to develop substation/civil plans for sitework including grading, off-site improvements, drainage facilities, fencing and block walls, and landscaping. In addition, completes calculations and prepares designs for substation steel structures, foundations, and control enclosures.
  • Provides civil engineering expertise to transmission line engineering analysis, route analysis and selection, calculations for line design (includes structure loading, foundation design and conductor sag), specifies materials and evaluates bid documents and technical submittals, and completes the construction package.
  • Acquires all necessary construction approvals and permits from the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Develops economical, technically feasible, reliable transmission and substation civil/structural designs with minimal supervision and guidance. Selects and widely applies engineering principles, theories and concepts in the design of transmission, and substation civil projects.
  • Independently scopes, routes, and sites substation and transmission line projects and evaluates alternatives in order to find best value.
  • Provides, mentoring, leadership, training, and direction to fellow staff members, and provides technical design and project peer review.
  • Provides accurate cost estimates and schedule input for use in company budgeting procedures such that cash flow requirements are identified.
  • Evaluates, benchmarks, and makes recommendations for the creation and improvements of substation and transmission standards and specifications. Performs studies, prepares and provides written and oral reports to management and internal and external customers.
  • Coordinates and interacts professionally with internal and external customers and stakeholders to ensure a successful project.
• Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company. Performs all work independently with oversight at key junctions of the project.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited school and 5 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, and must be a licensed PE. If no PE license then must have 8+ years as a practicing engineer.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Utility setting with specific experience in the areas of civil, structural and/or transmission engineering design.
• Civil experience of substation/switchyard site development or related design.
• Structural experience involving substation steel design or transmission pole design for projects up to 230kV.
• Transmission line design experience including overhead line design up to 230kV or underground line design up to 230kV.

Equipment and Applications

• PCs, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and software for structural steel design, foundation design, transmission line design, hydrology and hydraulics.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• General office environment. Travel may be required up to 25% of work hours and may consist of travel to remote parts of Nevada in order to scope substation sites or transmission alignments and support design and construction. Walking over rugged terrain at high elevation may be required.
