About the Role
As the Senior Embedded Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of bare-metal and RTOS-based embedded system software to generate, monitor, and control short-pulse, high-voltage (kV range) electric fields for medical applications. Responsibilities include taking concepts from early prototypes to volume production, contributing to software system architecture, working closely with a multi-disciplinary team for system integration, and performing HW, SW, and FW verification and validation.
To Make an Impact, You Will:
- Specify, develop, and test software applications for a novel medical device in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Hands-on hardware bring-up, system debugging, and code optimization and architecture.
- Meet product requirements through analysis, implementation, and verification of hardware, firmware, and software design tradeoffs.
- Deliver high-quality real-time C/C++ code for subsystems using QNX-based RTOS and bare metal-based Microchip dsPIC architectures.
- Design and document the software architecture and firmware implementation on hardware through prototyping, integration, verification, and production phases.
- Review security and authentication requirements for subsystems and accessories, selecting secure MCU and authentication chips, and implementing designs to ensure secure use and/or access.
- Help define requirements for interfacing hardware components including RFID, thermal and optical sensors, and serial communication devices.
- Understand the company’s Quality Policy and Quality System requirements as related to product development.
- Assist in the development of detailed software specifications and provide realistic time estimates for software development.
- Expand knowledge of product domain, requirements, design, development, test, and release software processes, tools, methods, and coding best practices.
- Ensure proper software integration working in coordination with the team of engineers and quality analysts, to make sure that it passes and sustains all the validation standards including ISO/IEC-62304 and FDA regulations.
- Participate in cross-functional team efforts in the definition, integration, verification, and validation of products and sub-systems of moderate complexity.
- Identify the root cause of moderate to complex software issues and some systems issues using appropriate debug and analysis tools.
- Escalate and articulate/summarize encountered technical software issues to project leadership in a timely fashion.
- Mentor and grow talent across engineering organizations.
To Excel, You Will Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field required.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in embedded software development on resource-constrained platforms.
- Extensive experience developing secure networked user-facing applications using C/C++/STL on BSD or Linux operating systems.
- Experience with software engineering concepts and the software development life cycle.
- Experience developing applications for safety-critical regulated industries.
- Experience with small-footprint RTOSs.
- Experience with secure MCUs, authentication chips and protocols.
- In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience using SPI, I2C, CAN, UART and other serial protocols.
- Experience with embedded test framework.
- Experience with Linux, QNX, or similar OS.
- Experience with common scripting languages.
- Medical device industry experience preferred.
- Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, and digital/analog circuit design.
- Ability to read hardware schematics and understand the implications for embedded firmware.
- Familiarity with version control systems.
