The Sr. Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, integrates, and tests software for complex embedded defense systems. This role requires at least 5 years of professional experience in C, C++, C#, and/or Java within embedded hardware environments, strong computer science fundamentals, and the ability to independently own technical projects. The engineer collaborates closely with systems, hardware, and test engineering teams, contributes to architecture and design decisions, and provides technical leadership to other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement embedded software solutions for complex defense systems using C, C++, C#, and/or Java.

  • Integrate software with embedded hardware platforms and ensure reliable operation within real-time and resource-constrained environments.

  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, and test engineering teams to define requirements, interfaces, and integration strategies.

  • Drive technical projects independently from concept through deployment, including planning, execution, and delivery of high-quality software.

  • Contribute to software architecture and object-oriented design decisions, ensuring scalable, maintainable, and robust solutions.

  • Follow formal software development processes and lifecycle activities, including requirements analysis, design documentation, implementation, and verification.

  • Develop and execute unit tests and participate in broader software testing activities to validate functionality, performance, and reliability.

  • Conduct code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and overall software quality.

  • Apply strong computer science fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, complexity analysis, computer architecture, and operating systems to solve complex technical problems.

  • Use version-control systems such as Git to manage source code, branching, merging, and release activities.

  • Work within Linux/Unix and/or Windows operating environments to develop, build, debug, and deploy embedded software applications.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement effective corrective actions.

  • Help mentor and guide other engineers by sharing best practices, reviewing designs, and providing technical feedback.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional software development experience.

  • 5+ years of industry experience delivering high-quality, innovative applications using C, C++, C#, and/or Java.

  • Proven computer science fundamentals in algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.

  • Experience following formal software development processes and working within a defined software development lifecycle.

  • Proficiency with Linux/Unix and/or Windows operating environments.

  • Experience with Git or other software version-control systems.

  • Solid understanding of core computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, computer architecture, and operating systems.

  • Experience with unit testing, broader software testing practices, and participation in code reviews.

  • Ability to independently own and drive technical projects from design through implementation and testing.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively across systems, hardware, and test engineering teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience developing applications in C, C++, C#, and/or Java across embedded and general-purpose environments.

  • Experience working with Unix/Linux and Windows platforms in a development and debugging context.

  • Familiarity with vision systems or related technologies (if applicable to project needs).

  • Experience with formal code review practices and collaborative development workflows.

  • Ability to contribute to architecture-level decisions and long‑term system design.

  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

  • Demonstrated capability to deliver high‑quality, maintainable, and well‑documented code in complex systems.
