Job summary

Amazon.com LLC, Prime Air, Seattle, is seeking a Sr. Electrical Hardware Engineer to drive end-to-end hardware development for flight-critical avionics systems, collaborating with propulsion, structures, firmware, software, safety, certification, and production teams.

You will own the hardware development lifecycle, develop verification and validation plans per DO-160/DO-254, lead root-cause analysis, and advance DFMA/DFR with suppliers to ensure reliability in production.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical/computer engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years hardware engineering experience in avionics or related field.
  • Root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team leadership.
  • PCB design experience: schematic capture, stack-up, board layout.
  • Proficiency with EE hardware tools such as Altium, OrCAD, MATLAB/Simulink.

Responsibilities

  • Own hardware development lifecycle within avionics systems.

Job description

As a Sr. Electrical Hardware Engineer on our team, you will be responsible for end-to-end hardware development lifecycle across design, validation, and manufacturing for flight-critical avionics systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams - including propulsion, structures, firmware, software, safety, certification, production - to meet the highest standards of safety and reliability.

Key job responsibilities
  • Own product development lifecycle of hardware(s) within the avionics system.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation test plans, including qualification and compliance against aerospace standards (e.g., DO-160, DO-254).
  • Bring up EE hardware, validate interfaces, and unblock system integration across flight computer and connected sensor subsystems.
  • Lead root cause analysis of hardware failures across hardware/software interfaces, develop corrective actions, and implement fixes in production hardware.
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Reliability (DFR) with fabrication, assembly, and qualification vendors.
  • Lead manufacturing, in-service, and reliability initiatives for avionics hardware in production.

Prime Air is Amazon's autonomous drone delivery service. Our mission is to build a safe, ultra-fast, and convenient drone delivery system that transforms the way packages are delivered to customers worldwide. Avionics Hardware Team at Prime Air develops and sustains Electrical and Electronics (EE) Hardware for the avionics systems of autonomous drones - including flight computers, air data sensors, cameras, radars, lighting systems, and electrical wiring interconnect systems - at Amazon's delivery scale.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or above in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of hardware engineering experience
  • Experience in root cause analysis and error correction, identifying changes to procedures and systems to implement long-term fixes and avoid repeating issues
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
  • Experience in PCB design, including schematic capture, stack-up, and board layout.
  • Proficiency with EE hardware design tools (e.g. Altium, OrCAD, MATLAB/Simulink).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects
  • Experience with product level validation testing (Thermal, EMC/EMI, Shock, Cycle Testing, etc.)
  • 7+ years of electrical and electronics hardware engineering experience (0-100V class).
  • Experience with aerospace or aviation electronics and applicable standards (DO-160, DO-254).
  • Experience in sensor design and integration for aerospace applications (air data sensors, cameras, radar, IMUs, LIDAR).
  • Experience in reliability engineering, including accelerated life testing, failure rate modeling, and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Experience in electrical wiring interconnect system (EWIS) design and harness integration.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
