Job summary

Consumers Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support our distribution, generation, and storage systems. The role involves leading complex projects, collaborating with teams, and directing engineers and technicians as needed.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (ABET) with 4+ years of experience, and a PE license is preferred. This position is hybrid with onsite days in Michigan locations and relocation assistance for qualified candidates.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited B.E.E. with 4+ years in advanced electrical engineering.
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) required or with 4+ years experience.
  • Experience in distribution planning and electrical systems design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering tasks using CAD and engineering software.
  • Prepare electrical system specifications and cost estimates for budgets.
  • Ensure conformance to standards by coordinating installations, testing, and documentation.
  • Lead design and implementation of electrical systems and liaise with clients on project matters.
  • Monitor project progress and prepare reports for upper management.

Location

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to North Kent, Greenville, or Grand Rapids, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for engineering and design to support the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and leads complex technical projects and may manage the work of lower level engineers and technicians as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products and serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes.
  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management.
  • Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies and provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Proficient in design and calculation software
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power)
  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years in experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
    • [OR] Engineering Degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering licensewith four (4) or more years in experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
