Job summary

Leggett & Platt, Inc. is seeking a Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to support four facilities in Western Michigan.

You will drive regulatory compliance, strengthen safety performance, and foster a proactive safety culture across the Work Furniture business. You will lead investigations, coordinate training, and collaborate with Operations, Engineering, HR, Legal, and external agencies to meet environmental and safety objectives.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA requirements and environmental compliance regulations
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses
  • Ability to travel regularly between facilities in Western Michigan

Responsibilities

  • Support EHS programs across four manufacturing facilities in Western Michigan
  • Partner with site leadership to improve safety performance and regulatory compliance
  • Conduct facility inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and compliance reviews
  • Lead or support incident investigations and corrective action implementation
  • Develop practical solutions to reduce risk and prevent incidents
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA/MIOSHA, EPA, EGLE, NFPA, and other regulations
  • Assist with environmental programs including waste, air, water, and stormwater
  • Develop and support emergency response plans and drills
  • Coordinate EHS training programs for new hires and site staff
  • Coach leaders on hazard recognition and safety communication
  • Monitor and report EHS performance metrics and corrective actions
  • Support corporate EHS programs and standards
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, HR, Legal, and external agencies

We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Senior Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist within our Environmental Health & Safety team to help support our Work Furniture business. In our Furniture Components business, we design, manufacture, and distribute a wide range of components and finished products that enhance comfort, motion, and style in upholstered furniture, including recliner mechanisms, seating support systems, and sofa sleeper units. With a global footprint that includes international manufacturing, product development, distribution, and sales, we are strategically positioned to support upholstered furniture manufacturers around the world.

Our Work Furniture business produces task and finished components, as well as select lines of private label finished seating. As a Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, you will have the opportunity to support and strengthen EHS activities across four facilities in Western Michigan. So, what will you be doing as a Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist?
  • Supporting EHS programs and initiatives across four manufacturing facilities in Western Michigan
  • Partnering with site leadership to improve safety performance, regulatory compliance, and employee engagement
  • Conducting facility inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and compliance reviews
  • Leading or supporting incident, near‑miss, and hazard investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation
  • Identifying trends and developing practical solutions to reduce risk and prevent future incidents
  • Supporting compliance with OSHA/MIOSHA, EPA, EGLE, NFPA, and other applicable regulations
  • Assisting with environmental programs related to waste management, hazardous materials, air, water, and stormwater requirements
  • Developing and supporting emergency response plans, drills, and preparedness activities
  • Coordinating new hire, annual, and site‑specific EHS training programs
  • Coaching leaders and employees on hazard recognition, safety communication, and risk reduction strategies
  • Monitoring and reporting EHS performance metrics, including injuries, near misses, audits, inspections, and corrective actions
  • Supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of corporate EHS programs and standards
  • Collaborating with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, HR, Legal, and external agencies to support safety and environmental objectives
To be successful in this role, you'll need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive EHS experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA requirements and environmental compliance regulations
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action management
  • Ability to identify workplace hazards and implement practical risk‑reduction solutions
  • Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly between facilities in Western Michigan
Things we consider a plus:
  • Knowledge of ergonomics, machine guarding, industrial hygiene, lockout/tagout, powered industrial trucks, and hazardous energy control programs
  • Experience with EHS management systems such as Enablon, Benchmark Gensuite, or similar platforms
  • Strong analytical and continuous improvement mindset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools, including Teams, SharePoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Copilot
