Job description

Are you a charismatic data engineering Developer Advocate at heart, someone who excels in the spotlight, loves presenting and hosting events, and possesses a deep knowledge of Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and Apache Iceberg?

As an Open Lakehouse Developer Advocate, you'll share your knowledge and be a conduit between the engineering teams and the wider developer community of data engineers building their careers, products, and services on technologies like the open source Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and Apache Iceberg. This role will leverage your strong expertise in the Open Lakehouse to educate, inspire, and support the growing user base.

Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of knowledge-sharing activities. You’ll deliver engaging talks, host insightful panels and meetups, create informative blogs and video content, develop comprehensive courseware, provide expert answers in community forums, and conduct one-on-one sessions with influential data engineers and scientists. These efforts will help disseminate best practices and foster a thriving Open Lakehouse community.

Reporting directly to the Head of Developer Relations, you’ll collaborate with fellow developer advocates and program managers to create a cohesive and impactful developer relations strategy.

The ideal candidate for this position will embody the values of our Developer Relations team: a deep passion for data engineering, genuine empathy for developers’ needs, and a strong commitment to effectively explaining our products.

More about the team:

Databricks has built a powerful collection of open source software and commercial services to help make data teams worldwide more successful in solving tough problems. Our ability to execute this mission depends on data engineers, data analysts, data scientists, and machine learning practitioners, all having great experience in a scalable way.

The Developer Relations (DevRel) team at Databricks is dedicated to building and fostering relationships with communities of data practitioners. Our primary goal is to drive awareness and adoption of the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform and related open source software (OSS) solutions such as Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and MLflow.

The impact you will have:

  • Evangelize and broaden awareness of Open Lakehouse as a fundamental paradigm to leverage powerful open lakehouse formats for analytics, ETL, and AI.
  • Support and expand the Open Lakehouse community, including meetups and user groups, to attract tens of thousands of participants and foster a thriving community.
  • Foster enthusiasm for Open Lakehouse by leveraging creativity and innovation to create engaging experiences and content, welcoming novel perspectives and stimulating discussions.
  • Enable data engineers to excel in building their data infrastructure with an Open Lakehouse architecture.
  • Empower data engineers to reach their objectives and share their success stories efficiently.
  • To facilitate the widespread advancement of the Open Lakehouse, create high-quality educational resources such as videos, sample notebooks, tutorials, and blog posts.
  • Be the bridge between the Open Lakehouse community and Databricks engineering, ensuring all voices are heard.
  • Provide robust support for users across platforms like Slack, StackOverflow, and online communities to stay attuned to their feedback and requirements.
  • Continue and extend sample notebooks and code, particularly those related to the Open Lakehouse.

What we look for:

  • 5+ years experience as DevRel and as a software developer, solutions architect, or related profession.
  • Subject matter knowledge of solving data engineering problems at all scales.
  • Experience with Python, SQL, and Scala. Experience with Rust and Golang would be preferred.
  • You have experience working with and contributing to open source communities.
  • You are a leader in the Open Lakehouse communities.
  • You are an active participant in the community and regularly present at meetups, and events and write technical articles.
  • You are a solid communicator with experience writing about, teaching, and speaking about complex technical topics.
  • You are a strong public event speaker, YouTuber, or podcast host on technical topics.
  • You have empathy and understanding of developer personas and can apply that to the design and development of good experiences in tutorials, notebooks, communities, and more.
