Job summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Sr. Regional Design Manager to join its design team. You will lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver globally consistent data center designs while maintaining quality within budget and schedule.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance.
• 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities.
• Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance.
• Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent DC designs and maintaining a high level of quality within budget and schedule.
• Influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program wide design changes
• Manage escalations
• Identify multi-disciplinary design decisions
• Understand design development, design change management, permitting and implementation lifecycle
• Project management skills (critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, cost management)
• Design consultant management including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments
• Communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality
• Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.

As a Sr. Regional Design Manager, you will be part of a global engineering leadership team, comprised of highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. AWS self-performs engineering on the majority of our capacity delivery projects. This unique vista point allows the Design Managers to maintain a close connection with project details and drive project outcomes. Key job responsibilities

• Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent DC designs and maintaining a high level of quality within budget and schedule.
• Able to influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program wide design changes
• Manage escalations

• Understanding of design development, design change management, permitting (working with AHJs), and implementation (working with CMs/RFIs/Submittals) lifecycle
• Project management skills (critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, cost management)
• Design consultant management including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments
• Effectively and consistently communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality Throughout the lifecycle of the project.
• Manage competing priorities.
• Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work through standardization and automation.
• Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
• Ability to motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.
• Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%. International travel may be needed.

A typical day as a DC Design Manager involves:

• Leading design team meetings to coordinate cross-disciplinary decisions
• Reviewing and approving design documents and changes
• Managing consultant deliverables and performance
• Responding to technical escalations from various teams
• Collaborating with procurement and construction teams on implementation
• Coordinating with AHJs for permitting requirements
• Tracking project metrics for schedule, cost, and quality
• Creating and updating best practice documentation
• Participating in stakeholder meetings
• Conducting site assessments and construction reviews
• Managing critical path schedules and risk mitigation
• Mentoring team members on design standards
• Analyzing design optimization opportunities
• Reviewing RFIs and submittal responses

Basic Qualifications

• 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
