Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. is seeking a Sr. Regional Design Manager to join the global design team responsible for the design and operation of data center facilities worldwide.

You will influence design direction, drive delivery, and establish design procedures with external partners and regulatory agencies. You will engage with Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Security engineers to ensure scalable, cost-effective and energy-efficient infrastructure.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities.
• Experience in design, installation, startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems.
• Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment or design related to data center electrical and mechanical topology

Responsibilities

• Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent DC designs and maintaining a high level of quality within budget and schedule.
• Able to influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program wide design changes
• Manage escalations
• Identify multi-disciplinary design decisions
• Understanding of design development, design change management, permitting (working with AHJs), and implementation (working with CMs/RFIs/Submittals) lifecycle
• Project management skills (critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, cost management)

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Sr. Regional Design Manager to join its design team. As a Sr. Regional Design Manager, you will be part of a global engineering leadership team, comprised of highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. AWS self-performs engineering on the majority of our capacity delivery projects. This unique vista allows the Design Managers to maintain a close connection with project details and drive project outcomes. Y

Key job responsibilities

• Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent DC designs and maintaining a high level of quality within budget and schedule.

• Project management skills (critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, cost management)
• Design consultant management including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments
• Effectively and consistently communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality Throughout the lifecycle of the project.
• Manage competing priorities.
• Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work through standardization and automation.
• Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
• Ability to motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.
• Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%. International travel may be needed.

• Leading design team meetings to coordinate cross-disciplinary decisions
• Reviewing and approving design documents and changes
• Managing consultant deliverables and performance
• Responding to technical escalations from various teams
• Collaborating with procurement and construction teams on implementation
• Coordinating with AHJs for permitting requirements
• Tracking project metrics for schedule, cost, and quality
• Creating and updating best practice documentation
• Participating in stakeholder meetings
• Conducting site assessments and construction reviews
• Managing critical path schedules and risk mitigation
• Mentoring team members on design standards
• Analyzing design optimization opportunities
• Reviewing RFIs and submittal responses

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
• 5+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems experience
• Knowledge of both mechanical and electrical equipment or design related to data center electrical and mechanical topology
• Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
• Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities
• Experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission critical facilities, especially data centers

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with building codes and regulations for your region
• Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
• Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
