Job summary

Amazon is seeking a Data Center Construction Manager to lead large-scale data center builds, owning scope, schedule, cost, and quality. You will partner with operations, networking, security, and commissioning teams to deliver energy-efficient facilities and oversee contractor interactions from bidding to hand-off.

This role requires experience with electrical and mechanical systems for data centers and a strong background in construction management, cost control, and project governance.

Qualifications

  • Experience constructing electrical and mechanical systems for large-scale data center infrastructure.
  • Experience in construction management of large, complex projects involving major MEP plants.
  • Proficient in project control (cost and schedule) and formulating construction programmes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or 16+ years of related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own project scope, quality, schedule, and budget for construction of new builds or capital projects.
  • Oversee construction-related activities and manage construction teams on site.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Networking, Security, and Commissioning to build data centers.
  • Represent the owner on construction sites and interface with general contractors during bidding and closeout.
  • Develop construction scope and RFPs, negotiate bids, and ensure cost, schedule, and quality targets.
  • Manage documents, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and invoices; track progress and metrics.
  • Drive root-cause analysis for equipment failures and support commissioning and testing.
  • Support ongoing operations and capital requests, reviewing procedures and best practices.

Education

Bachelor’s degree or 16+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Own project scope, quality, schedule, and budget for construction of new builds or general capital projects.
  • Own construction project management and oversight of construction related activities.
  • Work alongside partner teams such as Operations, Networking, Controls, Security, and Commissioning to build Data Centers that directly support our customers.
  • Be a leader in your specific discipline (construction management, building services, architectural, electrical or mechanical engineering).
  • Represent Amazon’s owner’s representative on construction sites daily, interacting with construction trades.
  • Be Amazon’s construction representative on multiple data center building and capital improvement construction project sites from construction start through hand‑off to operations.
  • Direct interface with construction general contractors during the construction bidding, award, execution, punch‑list, and closeout phases.
  • Create construction project scope and request for proposals.
  • Conduct negotiations with general contractors and evaluate bids and proposals with detail and accuracy.
  • Manage and drive cost, schedule, and quality while managing construction contractors and vendors.
  • Perform construction project management activities, including management of documents, submittals, RFIs, change orders, invoices, quality, scope, and schedule.
  • Drive construction teams to troubleshoot and perform root‑cause failure analysis on equipment failures.
  • Support commissioning and integrated system testing and oversight.
  • Support operation of installed facilities, including review of procedures, best practices, and maintenance initiatives.
  • Support capital request creation.
  • Analyze and report construction progress and financials.
  • Record and report key construction metrics to team members and management.
  • Contribute to construction initiatives aimed at improving construction efficiency and increasing data center resiliency.
  • Provide constructability reviews for electrical and mechanical designs for new or optimization of existing data centers.
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience constructing electrical engineering systems including large‑scale power distribution/generation gear and mechanical engineering systems including cooling systems.
  • Experience in construction management or construction program management of large, complex projects involving large‑scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants.
  • Experience in project control (cost or schedule, or both) and formulating construction programmes, especially for infrastructure and mission‑critical projects both on‑site and in pre‑construction environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or an equivalent engineering science or 16+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience delivering multi‑media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance projects with specific expertise in CWA 404 and NPDES permitting, groundwater protection, wastewater discharge, and natural and cultural resource evaluations.
  • Experience in Project Controls Standards subject matter, including Estimating, Cost Management, Cost Forecasting, Schedule Management, Progress Measurement, Change Management, Risk Management, WBS/CBS/SBS, Cash‑Flow (VOWD), and Benchmarking.
  • Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements.
  • Understand data center system‑level architecture and electrical engineering principles, including switch gear, UPS, transformers, circuit breakers, breaker coordination studies.
