Job summary

Consumers Energy is seeking a Senior Compression Technician to support natural gas compression, transmission, distribution, and SCADA systems across Michigan. The role requires handling complex instrumentation, control systems, and field equipment while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will have an associate degree or equivalent with PLC/DCS programming, HMI graphics, and gas operations experience, with relocation support where eligible.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent with 4+ years PLC/DCS ladder logic programming and HMI graphics experience
• Experience with compressed air systems, heaters, boilers, valves and actuators in gas processing environments
• Proficient reading and interpreting drawings, vendor manuals, and procedures

Responsibilities

• Support project teams with knowledge transfer and succession planning
• Analyze, diagnose, design tests, and troubleshoot complex issues
• Consult with vendors and engineers to provide technical solutions for higher complexity problems
• Operate and maintain gas processes, control systems, and end devices; provide programming as needed
• Plan and document MGSS codes, perform SOX inspections, and conduct complex testing for compliance
• Lead system design reviews, documentation, and onsite verification for construction projects

Location: This position is onsite at St Clair, or Lansing located in Ira and Lansing, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Compression Technician provides a high level of support and maintenance for the Natural Gas Compression, Gas transmission, Distribution, Storage, and Commercial & Industrial systems. The incumbent is the SME for a wide variety of communication systems, functional controls, instrumentation, and measurement components integrated into a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Follow all safety standards including completing safety tailboards and JSA's and have knowledge of national electrical code and requirements for installations in hazardous environments. Utilize cross functional knowledge and ability to support multiple locations across the state. Perform complex installs, maintain and troubleshoot electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other equipment for gas compression, gas distribution and transmission systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Ability to effectively support project teams: document knowledge transfer to aid in succession planning process; embracing and coaching of new employees; practice good time management and planning.
• Analyze, diagnose, design tests, and provide a recommended solution by means of troubleshooting
• Consult with vendors, manufactures, contractors, operators, engineering & other SME's to provide technical expertise on higher complex issues. Technicians to review and interpret drawings, vendor manuals, and procedures for the purposes of installing, troubleshooting, & maintaining equipment
• Operate and analyze natural gas processes, control systems, hardwired systems and end devices along with providing programming expertise required to maintain a typical compressor station, transmission valve site, distribution metering system
• Operate and maintain electronic equipment, diagnostic instruments, and software in performance of assigned duties
• Plan, perform, and document periodic MGSS (Michigan Gas Safety Standards) Code Work orders; complete SOX (Witnessing) Inspections, along with performing required complex testing in accordance with maintenance programs within Gas Operations to maintain compliance with MPSC regulations
• Responsible for job planning, drawing reviews, making design decisions, completion of required systems documentation, perform system checkout functions, lead point to point verification and provide technical assistance as required to support the completion of construction projects while functioning alone or while leading project teams
• Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of Gas Compression, Metering & Regulation, Distribution, Transmission, & Storage Fields. Broad Knowledge
• Knowledge of national electrical code & AGA standards Broad Knowledge
• Knowledge of RTU (IPM, I/O cards, etc.). Network communications- ethernet, RS485, modbus, cell modems, fiber optic Professional Standard

Physical Demands

This role is regulated under the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). This regulation covers functions in pipeline operations, pipeline maintenance or pipeline emergency-response. Employees in this role will be subject to random drug testing in accordance with the regulations set forth by the PHMSA.
