What To Expect

Battery cells are core to Tesla, and the 4680 cell is a particularly unique product merging numerous cutting-edge improvements in cell technology and manufacturing. Our product requirements demand ground-up cell architectures with state-of-the-art performance, manufactured at volumes that are orders of magnitude higher than the products they power. Tesla moves quickly, so being passionate and self-motivated to seek out and solve problems is critical. Our team works alongside engineering groups across various disciplines, requiring strong communication skills and a team-first mentality. You will work alongside seasoned industry experts, manufacturing technicians and operators, maintenance teams, supplier quality engineers, and everything in between.

We are seeking a highly motivated cell expert to join the Global Cell Quality team to interface with and support our manufacturing operations in Austin, TX. As someone with deep knowledge in “what good looks like,” you will be involved in developing specifications, conducting failure/root cause analysis, designing and executing tests/trials, analyzing manufacturing processes, and reviewing data. Willingness and passion to spend time on the factory floor and “get your hands dirty” are important. Excellent communication skills are critical as you will need to effectively deliver and receive highly technical information across multiple groups, many of whom are not cell experts (e.g., maintenance, facilities, logistics).

What You'll Do
  1. Implement the technical definition for global Tesla 4680 Cell Manufacturing in the Austin, TX Gigafactory.
  2. Serve as a critical technical interface between design, manufacturing engineering, supplier quality, and the factory.
  3. Collaborate with factory teams to drive and implement solutions on the manufacturing floor, including supporting and reviewing deviations, allowance criteria, and engineering trials.
  4. Work with quality systems teams to ensure adoption of best practices across the 4680 network.
  5. Conduct detailed risk assessments at the product and manufacturing levels to identify opportunities, mitigate risks, and improve yield.
  6. Interface with reliability engineering teams to implement findings from field tests, lifetime testing, and abuse engineering.
  7. Take a lead role in problem-solving efforts when necessary.
What You'll Bring
  • Degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience with advanced competency in science/engineering fundamentals.
  • Extensive expertise and experience with lithium-ion cells, likely 5-10+ years in the field, covering areas such as design, electrode, cell assembly, formation and aging, testing, and failure analysis.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills, along with strong interpersonal skills for effective cross-functional communication.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Desired but not required: hands-on experience building cells, data analytics skills, background in statistics, and understanding of Quality Systems fundamentals.
Benefits

Along with competitive pay, Tesla offers benefits from day 1, including:

  • Medical plans with $0 payroll deduction, dental and vision coverage.
  • Fertility, adoption, and surrogacy benefits.
  • Health Savings Account contributions, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) with employer match, stock purchase plans.
  • Insurance coverage including life, disability, and AD&D.
  • Employee assistance programs, paid time off, parental support, and voluntary benefits such as critical illness insurance.
  • Other perks: employee discounts, commuter benefits, Tesla Babies program, and more.

Expected compensation ranges from $80,000 to $198,000 annually, plus bonuses and stock awards. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and other factors.
