Job description

This opportunity entails a primary focus on bridge inspection tasks accompanied by bridge design and rehabilitation tasks. This position will lead an inspection team to complete bridge inspections of a wide variety in size and complexity for various clients in Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Division. This position works closely with the project and department manager to schedule inspections and equipment, write reports and coordinate with bridge owners on critical issues. In addition to bridge inspection, this position will also encompass load ratings.

During the inspection offseason, this position may assist with CAD projects as needed in which primary responsibilities include preparing drawings with CADD, assisting in other aspects of plan preparation such as information gathering, processing survey data, and creating exhibits for use in meetings. Focus of responsibilities will generally be related to transportation projects.

What You'll Do:

  • Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents and plans. Confirms procedures are followed and material used conforms to specifications.
  • Advises Contractor superintendent of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plan, specs, and contract. Reviews and resolves quantity disputes with contractor.
  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform sophisticated and complicated mathematical calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work to date.
  • Reviews Inspector's daily report of assigned work activities, contractor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.
  • Performs on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches.
  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Coordinates schedules and approves timecards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and 9 years of construction-related experience.
  • All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements.

What You'll Bring:

  • Exhibiting experience with PennDOT's Bridge Management System and/or other inspection data collection software.
  • Exhibiting knowledge of PennDOT and Other Agency publications, policies, and procedures regarding bridge inspection and load rating services.
  • Optimizing work processes by using knowledge of the most effective and efficient ways to get things done with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Independently progresses the majority of designs and tasks required of the discipline.
  • Exhibiting experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Exhibiting a thorough understanding of the application related to engineering, geometric and algebraic principles.
  • Managing time, proactively forecasting, and communicating project development needs.

What We Prefer:

  • Nationally Certified Bridge Inspector qualification (NCBI or CBSI).
  • Completion of advanced bridge inspection courses (NHI 130078 and/or PennDOT Bridge Scour Evaluation).
