About the Role
This role owns the API layer. You will design, secure, and operate the gateways through which systems on this program talk to each other - setting the design standards, enforcing the security model, and troubleshooting the integrations when traffic does something unexpected.
The work runs from architecture down to log files. You will make design decisions about how APIs are structured and protected, and you will also be the person tracing a root cause at two in the afternoon when an integration starts failing.
What You Will Do
- Design, deploy, and operate API gateway infrastructure in a cloud environment.
- Apply API design principles, security best practices, and industry-standard protocols across the program's interfaces.
- Build and maintain integrations between complex systems using APIs, message queues, streaming platforms, and ETL pipelines.
- Support Windows platforms and COTS applications running in cloud environments.
- Investigate log files to establish root cause on integration and platform issues.
- Perform system testing and validation across the API layer.
- Hold a total system perspective across cloud services, infrastructure, and security domains - understanding the relationships, dependencies, and requirements among them.
- Document API designs, configurations, and operational procedures.
Required Qualifications
Certification and background
- DoDD 8140 compliance. Security+ CE certification at minimum, held at time of hire.
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in a STEM field. [Confirm whether firm or whether additional experience may substitute.]
API gateway - the core of the role
- 5+ years with API gateway technologies. Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating gateways in production.
- Broadcom API Gateway (Layer7). [Appeared twice in the original — once as "strongly preferred" inside a Required bullet, once as its own Preferred item. Decide whether this is a hard requirement or a differentiator, and state it once. If it is genuinely required, that decision defines your candidate pool more than anything else in this posting.]
- API design. Strong command of API design principles, security best practices, and industry-standard protocols, including REST, GraphQL, and event-driven patterns.
Development and cloud
- Proficiency in Java, Python, or C#.
- Cloud architecture and system design, with hands-on experience in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Containerization and orchestration. Docker and Kubernetes or equivalents.
- Windows and COTS applications in cloud environments.
Operations and delivery
- Expert troubleshooting and root-cause analysis, including log file investigation.
- Demonstrated experience with system testing and validation.
- Ability to work effectively in an Agile development environment.
- Strong documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- API-related certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Azure API Management.
- API management platforms such as MuleSoft or Apigee.
- Service mesh technologies such as Istio or Linkerd.
- Integrating complex systems using message queues, streaming platforms, and ETL pipelines.
- Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
- Cloud solution optimization.
- Cloud platforms beyond the primary environment - Oracle or IBM.
- Integration of virtualized applications, including application streaming or layering techniques.
