Job summary

Battelle seeks an Anatomic Pathology Senior Technician to support necropsy and histopathology activities in Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH. The role requires handling hazardous materials, maintaining GLP standards, and coordinating with teams across studies.

The position operates Monday–Friday with overtime, on-call and holiday work; candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to commute between sites. AAS in Animal Science or related field with 3+ years of experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to work in BSL-2/BSL-3 environments and wear respiratory protection.
  • Willingness to be immunized per risk.
  • Willingness to participate in random drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals with tissue collection, fixation, and labeling.
  • Work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory environments with hazardous materials.
  • Process tissues for histopathology and cross-train in histology.
  • Analyze antimicrobial use and support outbreak detection and response.
  • Train and guide staff; act as technical lead on parts of studies.
  • Revise and author SOPs and study memos; maintain study files.
  • Record data and perform quality control per GLP standards.
  • Identify deviations and report observations clearly.

Job Summary

We are currently seeking an Anatomic Pathology Senior Technician. This position is a full-time opportunity located in Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH. This role sits within Battelle's Life Science Research business and supports the Pathology department by performing necropsy procedures on small and large animals, trimming tissues for histopathology processing, and generating data across a variety of study types. The position operates Monday through Friday and will require overtime on nights and weekends, on-call availability, and work on holidays.

Responsibilities

As an Anatomic Pathology Senior Technician, the selected individual will perform technical laboratory and pathology support functions across multiple study types while contributing to compliance, safety, and team leadership. Responsibilities may include:

  • Performing necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals, including gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling of specimens
  • Working with highly hazardous biological and toxic materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory environments
  • Processing tissues for the histopathology team following established SOPs and safety protocols; cross-training in histology (e.g., embedding, sectioning, staining) to provide flexible workflow coverage
  • Analyzing antimicrobial use and resistance data and supporting outbreak detection and response, including coordination with laboratories and healthcare partners
  • Training and guiding staff on specific necropsy skills and serving as technical lead on portions of studies
  • Revising and authoring SOPs, co-authoring methods and study memos, and maintaining study files in accordance with standard operating procedures, protocol requirements, and client specifications
  • Recording data and performing quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP); preparing and submitting study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance
  • Recognizing when technical operations deviate from accepted practices, preparing deviation reports as needed, and reporting observations and problems clearly and concisely
  • Acting as the laboratory technical point of contact; maintaining laboratory cleanliness, managing inventory, ordering and receiving supplies, and overseeing waste management
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment including autoclaves; performing routine maintenance and calibration; preparing and archiving equipment logbooks
  • Using electronic databases for sample tracking and documenting necropsy examinations; performing basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment
  • Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and necropsy activities, including performing dilutions and associated mathematical calculations
  • Participating in continuous improvement and management initiatives; serving as a certified trainer, select agent custodian, and/or certified shipper as applicable
  • Executing moderately complex and non-standard assignments, exercising judgment to assess issues and recommend solutions
  • Completing standard and non-standard tasks, keeping the supervisor regularly informed of work status
Key Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Animal Science, Zoology, or a related biology field with 3 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Justice (DoJ) Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CDC approval to work with Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) material
  • Willingness to work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 (biocontainment) environments and ability to wear appropriate respiratory protection
  • Willingness to be immunized with FDA-licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for those at occupational risk of exposure to biological agents
  • Willingness to participate in random drug screening
  • Ability to respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations
  • Medically fit to perform all assigned duties while wearing appropriate respiratory equipment in a laboratory setting
  • Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours
  • Willingness to commute between Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH locations
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens in order to be considered for this role.

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $27.00 – $29.00 per hour, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
