Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a Senior AI/Data Science Engineer within the Cranial and Spinal Technologies portfolio. The role focuses on AI-driven research, algorithm development, and feasibility studies for imaging, navigation, robotics, and image-guided procedures.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team across AI, ML, computer vision, and medical imaging. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years’ experience (or a Master’s) and strong Python/SQL skills, plus experience in AI/ML

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience with Python and SQL.
  • Experience developing and evaluating AI, machine learning, or statistical models.
  • Experience in machine learning, data analysis, and algorithm development.
  • Experience using computing frameworks, data analysis platforms, or modeling environments.
  • For degrees earned outside the U.S., meet 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research to identify, evaluate, and validate AI, ML, DL, and generative AI approaches.
  • Develop algorithms and proof-of-concept solutions to assess feasibility and opportunities.
  • Analyze structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data using statistical modeling and ML techniques.
  • Design experiments, establish evaluation criteria, and benchmark algorithm performance.
  • Develop software and analytical tools for data processing and model development.
  • Apply AI and computer vision to imaging, navigation, robotics, or image-guided procedures.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, and clinical stakeholders to define problems and communicate findings.
  • Document research activities, results, and recommendations.

A Day in the Life Cranial and Spinal Technologies (CST) is one of Medtronic’s largest and most innovative portfolios, focused on advancing technologies that support spine, cranial, navigation, and robotic‑assisted procedures. Within CST Research & Technology (R&T), the Robotics and Navigation Technology Development Center evaluates emerging technologies, conducts early‑stage feasibility research, and develops next‑generation capabilities that may support future surgical navigation, imaging, robotics, and artificial intelligence‑driven solutions. This role is part of a multidisciplinary team working across artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, medical imaging, and navigation technologies. As a Senior AI/Data Science Engineer, you will investigate complex technical challenges and develop AI‑driven solutions that support early‑stage research and technology development. This role is focused on algorithm innovation, experimentation, proof‑of‑concept development, and technical feasibility assessment in areas including medical imaging, surgical navigation, robotics, and image‑guided procedures.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct research to identify, evaluate, and validate artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI approaches.
  • Develop algorithms and proof‑of‑concept solutions to assess technical feasibility and future application opportunities.
  • Analyze structured, semi‑structured, and unstructured data using statistical modeling and machine learning techniques.
  • Design experiments, establish evaluation criteria, and benchmark algorithm performance.
  • Develop software and analytical tools that support data processing, model development, and technical investigations.
  • Apply AI and computer vision methods to imaging, navigation, robotics, and image‑guided procedure applications.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, and clinical stakeholders to define technical problems and communicate findings.
  • Document research activities, experimental results, and technical recommendations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience with Python and SQL.
  • Experience developing and evaluating AI, machine learning, or statistical models.
  • Experience in machine learning, data analysis, and algorithm development.
  • Experience using computing frameworks, data analysis platforms, or modeling environments.
  • For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with generative AI, large language models (LLMs), retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), or agentic AI concepts.
  • Experience with deep learning, computer vision, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
  • Experience with medical imaging, surgical navigation, robotics, or image‑guided procedures.
  • Experience with registration, calibration, localization, tracking, or coordinate frame transformations.
  • Experience in healthcare, medical technology, or regulated technical environments.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$138,400.00 - $207,600.00

This position is eligible for a short‑term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
