Job description

Join to apply for the Sr. Aerodynamics Engineer (Starship) role at SpaceX.

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today, SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

Sr. Aerodynamics Engineer (Starship)

The Starship Aerodynamics team is responsible for predicting the aerodynamics and aerothermal environments of booster and ship during all phases of their missions. Aerodynamics engineers use models, simulations, and wind-tunnel testing to provide accurate predictions ahead of flight validation. The team works closely with the GNC (guidance, navigation, and control) team to enable safe landing and recovery of Starship stages. They also support vehicle structure engineers during design. Candidates should have a clear understanding of flow fields experienced across various flight regimes, from subsonic to hypersonic, and apply this understanding in their work.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepare, mesh, run, and post-process CFD models.
  2. Review post-flight data and compare it to pre-flight estimates.
  3. Interface with responsible engineers, providing inputs to their designs and ensuring understanding of physical phenomena.
  4. Write code and scripts in various languages to automate workflows.
Basic Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  2. 5+ years of experience with aerodynamic and aerothermal analysis.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  1. Master's degree or PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
  2. Experience with Siemens STAR-CCM+ and scripting in Java.
  3. Experience with NASA entry vehicle solvers (e.g., FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, DPLR).
  4. Experimental testing experience.
  5. Data processing and analysis in MATLAB or Python.
  6. Experience with Siemens NX.
  7. Experience with thermal protection systems.
  8. Strong background in external, compressible fluid dynamics.
Additional Requirements
  1. Willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed.
Compensation and Benefits

Pay range: $125,000 - $175,000 per year. Compensation is determined based on experience and skills. Benefits include stock options, bonuses, comprehensive medical coverage, 401(k), paid time off, and more.

ITAR Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible for work authorization under U.S. export regulations.
