Job summary

Quantinuum in Colorado seeks a Sr. Advanced Software Engineer to design and support software interfacing with lab hardware powering quantum systems.

You’ll build robust tools and pipelines that improve throughput and enable physicists and engineers to work more efficiently in a fast-paced R&D environment. Ideal candidates have 4+ years in lab or research software, 2+ years in Python or C++, and experience with hardware interfaces.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 4+ years of graduate and/or industry software experience in lab/research environments.
  • Minimum 2+ years of Python, C++, or similar OO language.
  • Minimum 1+ year building software that interfaces with physical hardware via device interfaces or instrumentation libraries.
  • U.S. Person per contractual requirements; citizens, permanent residents, or green card holders only. Nationals of PRC or Russia excluded unless US citizen.
  • Safety-sensitive role requiring pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain software that automates lab processes and interfaces with instruments and data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with physicists and hardware engineers to align lab workflows with software tools.
  • Develop internal tools and dashboards to visualize equipment status and system health in real time.
  • Improve observability and error reporting to speed debugging and reduce downtime.
  • Contribute to CI/CD workflows and automated testing; support software lifecycle.
  • Help define development best practices and code-review processes.
  • Travel up to 10% as needed.

Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Advanced Software Engineer for our Broomfield, CO location. Join a cross-functional team advancing the world’s highest-performing quantum computers. In this role, you’ll develop and support robust software systems that interface directly with lab equipment powering our commercial quantum systems. Your work will enable smoother daily operations, improve system throughput, and empower physicists and hardware teams to work more efficiently. This position is ideal for software engineers with experience in experimental labs, R&D test environments, or research settings where software directly interacts with physical systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain software systems that automate key quantum lab processes and orchestrate interactions between lab instruments, control systems, and data pipelines.
  • Collaborate closely with physicists and hardware engineers to understand lab workflows and deliver tailored software tools.
  • Develop and maintain internal tools and dashboards to visualize equipment status, monitor system health, log experimental runs, and track lab activity in real time.
  • Enhance system observability to support rapid debugging of issues and minimize operational downtime, including clear and actionable error reporting for end users.
  • Write clear, maintainable, and testable code in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Deploy and support lab software throughout its lifecycle, including updates, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose and resolve various software issues across the software stack, bringing in appropriate support from the broader software team as needed.
  • Contribute to improving CI/CD workflows, supporting automated testing and build processes.
  • Help define and evolve software development best practices, including version control standards, code review processes, and issue tracking conventions.
  • Occasional travel up to 10% may be expected.
YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor’s degree minimum
  • Minimum 4+ years of graduate and/or industry experience developing software in a laboratory or research environment.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience with Python, C++, or similar object-oriented programming language.
  • Minimum 1+ years of experience developing software that communicates with physical hardware via device interfaces, control protocols, and/or instrumentation libraries.
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People’s Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE:
  • Masters/PhD degree in Computer Science or field related to Quantum Computing preferred
  • Familiarity with experiment automation frameworks or lab control systems.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing and/or real-time systems.
  • Proficiency with Docker and experience managing containerized environments.
  • Comfort working in Linux and Windows development environments.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation APIs, messaging systems, or device protocols (e.g., serial, GPIB, TCP/IP).
  • Experience working with or automating laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, waveform generators, motorized stages, and data acquisition systems.

$132,000 - $152,000 a year

Compensation & Benefits:

The pay range for this role is $132,000– $152,000annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate’s skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
