SQL Specialist - Mid-Level+ Database Administrator GPO DBA

Description PENDING CONTRACT AWARD
- Provide tier-2/tier-3 troubleshooting, configuration, and routine support for SQL Server environments under the guidance of and in collaboration with the Senior SQL DBA, directly supporting operations across all federal business units.
- Support SQL Server database solutions including backup/recovery operations, schema management, patching, upgrades, and application integration.
- Execute backup and restore operations, design backup schedules, validate restore integrity, and support disaster recovery testing and point-in-time recovery (PITR) procedures as directed by the Senior SQL DBA.
- Implement security baselines, encryption configurations, and auditing protocols in accordance with GPO IT Security policies and standards.
- Respond to Requests for Change (RFCs) and incident tickets via the Government's ticketing system, supporting request lifecycles from submission to closeout to minimize downtime and enhance service delivery.
- Resolve tickets according to operational SLAs, escalating complex issues to the Senior SQL DBA as appropriate.
- Assist with SQL Server database builds, upgrades, and application‑integration efforts (including but not limited to SharePoint and legacy business systems).
- Support proactive capacity planning and system health monitoring, identifying trends and escalating anomalies.
- Provide database administration and maintenance across on‑premises servers and cloud environments as required.
- Execute patching cycles, apply minor and major patches, and validate system stability post‑deployment.
- Proactively address system errors and participate in after‑hours activities as needed for business continuity.
- Contribute to clear, actionable weekly reports detailing support activities, accomplishments, and risk/issues.
- Collaborate within and across division teams and communicate effectively with both IT and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Provide complementary team technology coverage for MariaDB, MS Access, and additional PostgreSQL/MySQL environments as part of the team's collective technology stack responsibilities.
Position Requirements
Mandatory — Government Pass/Fail
- At least 4 years' experience administering enterprise SQL Server database environments.
- Demonstrated experience with SQL Server (including current and recent versions).
- Experience with SQL scripting and T‑SQL development.
- Experience with patching, server maintenance, and upgrade execution in SQL Server environments.
- Experience with database backup and restore operations, including validation and testing.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot SQL Server database issues and escalating complex problems appropriately.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaborate within and across division teams, and communicate effectively with all levels of staff and management.
Highly Desired
- Experience with SQL Server Clustering.
- Experience with AlwaysOn Availability Groups and/or Failover Cluster Instances (FCI).
- Experience with High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) architectures, including failover testing.
- PowerShell scripting and automation for SQL Server administration tasks.
- Experience with ServiceNow or equivalent ITSM platform for ticket lifecycle management.
- Experience with Idera and/or SolarWinds for SQL Server database monitoring and capacity planning.
- Experience administering SQL Server databases in cloud environments (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
- Experience with MariaDB administration (supports team complementary coverage).
- Experience with MS Access database support (supports team complementary coverage).
- Experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL administration (supports team complementary coverage).
- Experience performing Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for SQL Server database incidents.
- Experience implementing database security baselines, encryption (TDE, Always Encrypted), and auditing.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies or standardized runbook automation for SQL Server provisioning.
- Experience supporting federal agency data platforms, modernization, or NIST cyber‑compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with ITIL, Agile, or modern database service management frameworks.

- Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Administrator (current/legacy)
- CompTIA DataSys+
Education
- Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent directly relevant professional experience accepted.
