Job summary

Alakaʻi Services Group Inc. (ASGI) is seeking a Sprinkler Technician to inspect, test, maintain, and repair automatic fire sprinkler and standpipe systems across JBPHH and Hawaii sites. You will ensure NFPA 13/14/20 compliance, coordinate impairments, and document results.

The role requires 3–5 years of field experience, NICET II, and DoD/Navy base access eligibility. Hawaii-based, on-site work with government facilities and safety-focused duties.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience inspecting, testing, and maintaining automatic fire sprinkler and fire suppression systems in commercial, industrial, or government/military facilities.
• NICET Level II certification required; Level III preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required, with ability to operate government or company vehicles on the installation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain DoD/Navy Base Access credential.
• U.S. Citizenship required for base access.
• State of Hawaii Backflow Prevention Tester Certification preferred.
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, and maintain wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam-water automatic sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA 25 and UFC standards.
• Perform routine inspections on schedule (annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly) per NFPA 25 and PWS.
• Inspect and test standpipe systems and fire pumps, including testing and pressure/flow measurements.
• Troubleshoot and repair deficiencies, including leaks, corroded piping, valve failures, and flow alarms.
• Coordinate impairments and fire watch procedures in line with NFPA 25 requirements.

Job description

Job Purpose

The Sprinkler Technician (Fire Suppression Systems Technician) is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of automatic fire sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire pumps, and special hazard suppression systems at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) and designated outlying military installations throughout Hawaii.

Work will be performed in accordance with applicable requirements, including NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, UFC 3-600-01, DoD/Navy installation directives, local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, and other applicable federal and installation standards. The position helps ensure fire suppression systems remain fully operational to protect government property and personnel.

The position reports to the Project Manager/Site Supervisor and works closely with the installation Fire Department, Facilities Engineering, and Government Quality Assurance Representative (QAR).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, and maintain wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam-water automatic sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA 25 and applicable UFC standards.
• Perform annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly, and weekly inspections as required by NFPA 25 and the Performance Work Statement (PWS).
• Inspect and test standpipe systems, including hose connections, pressure gauges, and flow tests, in accordance with NFPA 14.
• Inspect, test, and maintain electric and diesel-driven fire pumps in accordance with NFPA 20, including weekly/monthly churn tests and annual flow tests.
• Troubleshoot and repair system deficiencies, including leaking heads and fittings, corroded piping, valve failures, and waterflow alarm malfunctions.
• Replace sprinkler heads, control valves, check valves, alarm valves, and associated trim as needed.
• Perform hydrostatic testing and internal pipe inspections as required by NFPA 25 five-year cycles.
• Inspect, test, and maintain applicable special hazard suppression systems, including clean agent, Halon alternative, FM-200, CO2, and dry chemical systems.
• Maintain, service, and certify fire department connections (FDC) and backflow prevention assemblies
• Coordinate planned impairments, system shutdowns, and fire watch procedures with the installation Fire Department and building occupants in accordance with NFPA 25 impairment requirements.
• Ensure system tags, signage, valve labels, and as-built documentation are current and accurate.
• Document inspections, test results, deficiencies, and corrective actions in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and government-required reporting formats.
• Maintain compliance with applicable codes and standards, including NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, UFC 3-600-01, DoD/Navy directives, and local AHJ requirements.
• Coordinate with subcontractors and specialty vendors for specialized repairs, pipe replacement, or system modifications.
• Participate in quality control inspections, government QAR reviews, and safety inspections.
• Maintain required certifications and attend continuing education and training as required.
• Complete scheduled inspections within the timeframes established by the PWS and NFPA 25.
• Complete and submit inspection reports within required contract timeframes.
• Respond to emergency service calls within the response times established by the PWS.
• Ensure fire pump tests are conducted on schedule and results are properly documented and submitted.
• Prepare deficiency reports with appropriate corrective-action recommendations.
• Properly coordinate system impairments and initiate required fire watch procedures.
• Perform work in accordance with applicable NFPA, UFC, and AHJ standards and support satisfactory government QAR inspections

Required Skills and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate's degree or technical/vocational training in fire protection, plumbing, or mechanical systems preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of hands‑on experience inspecting, testing, and maintaining automatic fire sprinkler and fire suppression systems in commercial, industrial, or government/military facilities.
• NICET Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems Level II certification required; Level III preferred.
• Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter or equivalent trade certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license required, with the ability to operate government or company vehicles on the installation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD/Navy Base Access credential, including required background screening.
• U.S. Citizenship required for base access.
• State of Hawaii Backflow Prevention Tester Certification preferred.
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, including pipe, fittings, and equipment.
• Ability to work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
• Ability to work in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, and underground vaults.
• Ability to work outdoors in Hawaii's tropical climate conditions.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including pipe fitting, threading, cutting, and system flushing.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods

Work Schedule and Location

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, or as otherwise directed by the contract. On‑call or emergency‑response availability may be required, including participation in a rotating on‑call schedule.

Work locations include Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and designated outlying areas, including Ford Island, Lualualei, West Loch, Barbers Point, Kunia, and other designated sites.
