Job summary

TECO Energy’s Tampa Electric student co-op program in Safety offers hands-on learning in a real-world energy environment. You will work within the Safety Department to support leadership in safety initiatives, data collection, and process improvements while engaging with multiple business units.

The role emphasizes developing a behavioral safety culture, data analysis, and collaboration across teams, with on-site duties at Midtown Tampa and the surrounding service area.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in accredited university as undergraduate or graduate student for first semester in program.
• Knowledge of MS Office suite preferred.

Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company’s rules and procedures.

Position Summary/Details:

The Safety Department within TECO is responsible for leadership and safety support of TECO team members and contractors. The Safety Department works with business units to establish and set safety expectations; collaborates to move all TECO safety initiatives forward; provides guidance on Public Safety Programs; manages occupational safety, health, and accident prevention efforts; and advocates for a behaviorally based safety culture which in turn enables World Class Safety.

Key Responsibilities and/or Learning Objectives

Provide duties and responsibilities, learning objectives or projects the student will be responsible for during their time with us.

(List out 3-5 goals, projects or skills the student will be learning and contributing to during the semester/term.)

• Gather and analyze safety and health data,
• Document current process while identifying process improvements,
• Track project status and support completion, and
• Join in various outreach/engagement activities.

Physical Location of Co-op: (including address) : Main location is Midtown Tower 2 (3600 Midtown Dr. Tampa, FL 33607). Additional work may occur throughout the service territory.

Working Conditions: Mostly in a normal office environment, a successful candidate will visit the field approximately weekly. This will include riding in a company vehicle on-road and off-road, walking on uneven surfaces, and entering substations.

Preferred Availability: (select one)

(Most students can work Part-Time; Full-time means they might take a semester off/or take fewer classes)

Ideally a successful co-op can work 20-30 hours / week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

The successful applicant should be enrolled in an accredited university as a college undergraduate or a graduate level post-secondary educational program in a related discipline for the first semester the student joins the program.

Co-Op Requirements:

To qualifyas a co-op student, enrollment in the university’s co-op program (proof of enrollment required); if not eligible for co-op program (or program unavailable), the student will be considered an intern.

Required Degree: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Data Science, Occupational Safety or Public Health

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a basic understanding of:

• Safety, health, environmental, or emergency management; and/or
• Data science principles.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Working knowledge of MS Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Teams)

A pre-employment drug screening, as well as a background check (including education, employment, criminal and motor vehicle) will also be conducted as part of the pre-employment screening.
