This position is under general supervision and is responsible for assisting with all aspects of the City’s turf management, right-of-way vegetation control, hanging basket, and irrigation programs. The role also includes assisting with the general maintenance of the City’s fountains and parking garages. Occasionally, the position may be required to assist with the ground’s maintenance of city properties. The incumbent will work with the Right of Way Vegetation/ Turf Management Labor supervisor following specified procedures, policies, and standards set by the Grounds Maintenance Coordinator and/or Manager.
- Operates water truck/tanks and other watering devices needed for plant growth and development, sprayers and spraying equipment, mowing equipment, hand-held equipment such as edger, trimmer, and backpack blower.
- Utilizes shovels, rakes, saws, brooms, and other tools required for irrigation-related work, pressure washers, and other cleaning equipment as necessary.
- Performs cleanup duties including daily downtown, weekly assigned properties, scheduled events and festivals, emergencies (accidents, storms, natural disasters), turf renovation, sodding, seeding, sprigging, thatching, and aerating.
- Communicates effectively and respectfully with the public, fellow workers, crew members, supervisors, and all City employees.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, be on feet and/or walk for the majority of the workday, and navigate through various types of irrigation clocks/timers to optimize systems efficiently.
- Actively participates in other required duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2-5 years of experience in irrigation and/or landscape work.
- Valid SC driver’s license.
- SC Commercial Pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
