Job summary

The University of South Carolina Upstate is hiring a Sports Turf Technician to maintain USC Upstate Athletics Fields, Main Campus, and surrounding grounds in Spartanburg, SC. Under limited supervision, you will prepare, maintain, and beautify university properties and assist other crews as needed.

Responsibilities include mowing, trimming, operating heavy equipment, irrigation work, routine maintenance of grounds tools, and documenting tasks in the work order system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Successful background check required.

• Weed physically and chemically; collect litter; handle irrigation installation and repairs.
• Maintain grounds equipment and irrigation systems; install/maintain fencing; document work orders.
• Enter work functions into the work order system; adhere to safety and university policies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Sports Turf Technician University of South Carolina Upstate STA00500PO26 Spartanburg, SC

Under limited supervision from the Sports Turf Manager and Director of Landscape Services, the Sports Turf Technician is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and beautification of University properties. The position covers landscape management at the USC Upstate Athletics Fields, Main Campus, Perimeter Roadways, and George Dean Johnson School of Business, and, on occasion, assists the Building Maintenance crew and various setups.

Responsibilities

• Mow and trim grass; operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, skid‑steer, forklifts; transfer pallets of fertilizer, sod, plants, etc.; prune and trim trees and shrubs; mulch, plant, water, and fertilize shrubs, flowers, trees, and turf; plan student work schedules; coordinate tasks; and train student landscapers in proper performance of their duties.
• Weed both mechanically and chemically; pick up and remove litter, leaves, debris; remove snow and ice from walkways and roads; perform irrigation installation and repairs.
• Perform maintenance on grounds equipment, tools, irrigation systems, campus signage, and install/maintain fencing.
• Enter work functions into the work order management system and other data entry systems; complete and document work; work with various plant and chemical types that may develop allergens; adhere to prescribed protocols, safety, and all University policies and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Typically holds a high school diploma or GED. Requires one or more years of job‑related experience. A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. A successful background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Master Gardener Certificate or equivalent, 3‑5 years experience, horticulture vocational certificate, technical graduate, pesticide applicator license and experience maintaining athletic fields.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $36,608; Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
