Job summary

State of South Carolina’s College seeks a Grounds Maintenance Trades Specialist to maintain landscapes, roadways, and outdoor spaces. You will operate and service a range of grounds equipment, install landscape features, and manage irrigation systems while documenting care and adhering to safety procedures.

The role requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and 2+ years of related experience; a pesticide license is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; two years of related work experience, or alternative education as specified.
• Degree in horticulture or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• South Carolina pesticide license preferred.
• Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, irrigation, or facilities grounds operations.
• Knowledge of horticultural practices including landscape installation, pruning, fertilization, and pesticide applications.
• Experience operating heavy equipment and grounds maintenance machinery (tractors, loaders, aerial lifts, forklifts, mowers, power tools).
• Knowledge of irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and prioritize daily tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe, well-maintained campus grounds.
• Ability to guide temporary employees and support a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform grounds and landscape maintenance including mowing, edging, pruning, and irrigation system operation and repair.
• Operate and maintain diverse groundskeeping equipment and machinery.
• Prepare sites for landscape renovations and install trees, shrubs, and plantings.
• Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and grounds equipment; ensure cleanliness and readiness for use.
• Support building construction and renovation projects as needed.
• Maintain records and support departmental documentation requirements.
• Provide guidance and task assignments to temporary employees.
