Job summary

The City of Galt is seeking a temporary Sports Official to officiate basketball games primarily on Saturdays with occasional weeknights. You will referee, keep score when assigned, and enforce league rules while wearing the required uniform.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is currently recruiting for the temporary position of Sports Official. This position primarily requires availability on Saturdays with some weeknights needed at the end of the season.

Under direction, referee in Basketball. Keeps score when assigned; and does related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Received general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Coordinator.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Acts as referee and/or umpire at sporting events.
  • Supervision of games.
  • Wears proper officiating uniform as required.
  • Review and interpret league rules.
  • Maintain records and write reports.
  • Inspect playing facilities.
  • Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to the facility used.
  • Set-up and take down of equipment.
  • Score keeping when necessary.
  • Assists with the distribution of supplies and other related materials.
  • Settles disputes in a diplomatic and effective way.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Rules and officiating techniques of the assigned sport.
  • Carrying-out the role of the sports official.
  • Adult/Child/Infant First Aid, CPR, and AED Training.
ABILITY TO
  • Make quick and accurate decisions.

EXPERIENCE

Any volunteer or paid work experience is desirable but not required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old at time of hire.
  • Completion of an accredited Adult/Child/Infant First Aid, CPR, and AED training program within the last 2 years.
PHYSICAL DEMAND

Depending on assignment, must possess strength, stamina and mobility to work indoors in a recreational facility or to perform required work out doors including: frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces; lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; constant use of overall vision; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. May supervise children and be required to kneel, sit in low chairs, or sit on floor for prolonged periods. Must be willing to work out doors in all weather conditions with possible exposure to loud noise, traffic, and potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to chemicals, fumes and other environmental substances.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

An eligibility list will be established for candidates who pass the examination process; current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The eligibility lists will remain active for one year from the assessment completion date. When vacancies occur, candidates on the eligibility list may be contacted for additional interviews.
