Job summary

The Boys & Girls Club Whittier / Pico Rivera is seeking a passionate part-time Sports Coach to lead youth sports programs for elementary and middle school students. You will plan, organize, and deliver engaging coaching sessions, creating a positive and safe environment for children to develop athletic skills.

You will support middle school sites, model sportsmanship, plan activities with the Athletic Coordinator, supervise practices and games, and ensure safety.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 48 college credits or pass equivalency exam.
  • 1+ years of relevant experience with children/youth in an educational, recreational, or youth development setting.
  • California Driver's License.
  • CPR/First Aid, Mandated Reporter training.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate youth sports sessions at assigned sites.
  • Model good sportsmanship and enforce sportsmanlike behavior among players.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Coordinator to develop lesson plans, practice schedules, and events.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, engaging environment for participants.

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Sports Coach to lead youth sports programs for elementary and middle school students. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering engaging coaching sessions, while creating a positive and safe environment for students to develop their athletic skills. This is a part-time, school-year position that involves working directly with children to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

  • Support youth programming at assigned middle school sites.
  • Model good sportsmanship and always enforce sportsmanlike behavior among the players
  • Promote positive behavior using reinforcement and encouragement.
  • Plan and implement youth sports activities that promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Coordinator to develop lesson plans, practice schedules, and special events.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and engaging environment for all participants.
  • Lead practices for up to 25 student-athletes, ensuring sessions are inclusive, age-appropriate, and developmentally suitable.
  • Facilitate daily practices with attention to fun, safety, and skill-building.
  • Enforce all Boys & Girls Club policies and procedures.
  • Participate in daily site activities and contribute to a positive club culture.
  • Attend mandatory staff training, meetings, and development sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with other coaches and program staff.
  • Supervise youth during practices and games, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Serve as a positive role model and help youth develop conflict-resolution skills.
  • Assist with game-day setup, including equipment and field/court preparation.
  • Coach with a focus on effort, development, and sportsmanship while following league rules.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • __48__ College credits or pass equivalency exam

Experience:

  • 1+ years of relevant experience working with children and/or youth in an educational, recreational, or youth development setting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with youth, families, and staff
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple activities, maintain required documentation, and follow program schedules
  • Proficiency in using basic office technology and program-related tools or systems (e.g., email, attendance tracking systems, learning platforms)
  • Ability to understand and comply with organizational policies, safety procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws, including child safety and mandated reporting requirements

Required Qualifications

  • California Driver's License
  • Relevant certifications or training CPR/First Aid, Mandated Reporter training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and/or youth in an educational, recreational, or youth development setting
  • Experience working in a structured, youth-serving environment that requires adherence to policies, safety standards, and program guidelines
  • Ability to effectively engage with youth, families, and staff in a fast-paced, interactive setting

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to use a computer, phone, and standard office equipment
  • Work is performed in a club-style environment, including open floor plans, recreational areas, and outdoor activity spaces.
