Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Sports Attendant to support the Program Director and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for members and participants. You will assist with equipment, setup, game flow, and on-site supervision while upholding the YMCA values in every interaction.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sports Attendant assists the Program director in providing exemplary service to members and participants. Helps ensure the safety and well‑being of all employees, players, and spectators who may be participating within the program. The Sports Attendant will always be approachable and dedicated to providing participants with the most enjoyable experience possible. In addition, the Sports Attendant will incorporate the values of honesty, respect, caring, faith and responsibility into the daily functions of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Daily performs safety check of equipment
2. Sets up and breaks down equipment in a timely manner
3. Ensures that games begin and end at scheduled times
4. Assists Sports Director in Adult & Youth Sports and Interactive Zone programs
5. Assists supervising officials and participants at game sites
6. Responds to injuries through administering first aid and proper reporting
7. Settling on‑field and on‑court rule protests and disputes
8. Monitors on and off‑site activities and enforces rules and regulations
9. Obtains feedback from players & spectators regarding their participation in the program
10. Ensures all areas of responsibility are clean and free of potential safety risks
11. Communicates YMCA policies, programs, and special events
12. Promotes the YMCA mission, vision, and character development
13. Actively participates in annual fund raising (We Build People) campaigns
14. Assists with coaches meetings, captains meeting, dinners, and other special events
15. Be physically present in the program. This requires most weekend and evening hours
16. Attends center and association meetings as appropriate and directed by your supervisor
17. Attainment of goals and objectives as evidenced in the performance appraisal process
18. Works to increase participation and retention of members/participants
19. Develops and maintains good staff and volunteer relations
20. Assists with other duties as requested

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position operates in a sports, recreational, and community‑based environment and regularly interacts with members, participants, team members, leaders, and other stakeholders. The role requires frequent walking, standing, running, kneeling, climbing, stooping, and other physical movement associated with sports and recreational activities. The employee must be able to sit on the floor and return to a standing position. The position may require prolonged periods of standing or sitting and continuous attention to detail while managing multiple tasks. The employee must be able to lift, pull, and move up to 50 pounds and must be physically able to successfully complete and maintain required certifications. Flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends, may be required based on program and organizational needs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Wage Range: $12.77 - $14.00 hourly

The wage range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ good‑faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting salary for this position.
