Scope of Eligibility

Description

Working under the supervision of an official in the Office of Natural Lands Management, State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites this position conducts research and implements activities to preserve and manage biodiversity resources. Responsibilities align with the statutory and regulatory duties of the Natural Heritage Program, Natural Areas Program, and the New Jersey Natural Lands Trust.

Specific to Position

The duties may involve various tasks depending on the candidate’s experience, interests, and program needs. Responsibilities may include conducting botanical and ecological field surveys, inventories, and research at various sites across the State, either independently or as part of a team. The selected candidates may assist in managing State properties by overseeing species and habitat conservation, installing signage, and addressing encroachments. Additionally, they may review literature on plant species, ecological communities, and threats such as invasive plants, while also evaluating site suitability for preservation through acquisition and identifying management needs. Additional duties may involve preparing or contributing to reports and management plans, including creating and promoting educational materials about the importance of plants and botanical diversity; maintaining records of botanical, ecological, and site data; developing and applying skills in word processing, data analysis, database management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and other relevant applications.

Preferred Skill Set

Possesses a strong understanding of biodiversity and ecological processes that support natural communities and habitats, and experience in plant species identification. Equipped with the knowledge and experience to assist in land and species management based on scientific principles and program objectives. Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills, effectively conveying scientific information to diverse audiences through presentations and reports. Passionate about learning and managing New Jersey's natural communities and conservation of species, with a positive attitude and commitment to environmental stewardship. Capable of working outdoors in various conditions, including hiking steep terrain in high heat and humidity.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, botany, ecology, natural resource management, or related environmental field. Equivalent experience in a relevant field may be considered in lieu of a degree.

NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.

License

Operation of a state vehicle will require appointee to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
