The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is seeking an experienced speechwriter. The role involves writing speeches for the President and ensuring senior officials have necessary materials to represent the union effectively. Candidates should have a strong background in labor relations and at least seven years of relevant experience, with a focus on engaging communication strategies.
The selected individual will manage speech assignments, conduct extensive research, and develop compelling messaging that supports union priorities. Extended hours and travel may be required for this position.
This position is responsible for writing speeches and other communications for the President and has primary responsibility for ensuring that senior officials and other key AFSCME staff have the information and materials to represent the union before internal and external audiences. The incumbent works closely with the President, executive staff, department directors, and affiliate leaders to formulate themes and develop effective presentations that articulate the President’s and the union’s positions on priorities and major issues. The incumbent will also be responsible for writing, researching, and proofing communications drafted across the union’s platforms, particularly with respect to union priorities. This position is also responsible for coordinating strategic communications and projects as assigned.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with course work in labor relations, communications, political science, journalism or English; and a minimum of seven (7) year of work in the field with at least five (5) years as a speechwriter or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
