Position Summary

The Speech Clinical provides supervised clinical assessment and treatment for patients with communication, cognitive-communication, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders in the outpatient setting. This role supports individualized care planning, therapeutic intervention, and patient and family education while progressively developing independence as a licensed speech-language pathology provider. Working closely with a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist and interdisciplinary care team, the Clinical practices within established clinical guidelines and contributes to safe, high-quality, and compassionate patient care. Through accurate documentation, effective coordination, and adherence to regulatory and professional standards, this position helps ensure continuity of care and positive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform consultation, assessment, and differential diagnosis for patients with speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
  • Develop and implement individualized habilitative and rehabilitative treatment plans that address functional communication needs and safe swallowing practices.
  • Document evaluations, progress notes, care plans, and patient/family education accurately in the electronic medical record to support care continuity and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients, families, and caregivers regarding communication strategies, treatment expectations, and home programming.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care, timely referrals, and alignment of therapy interventions with overall patient goals.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, quality initiatives, and ongoing professional development to maintain best-practice standards.
QualificationsLicenses and Certifications Required:
  • ND state license to practice Speech Language Pathology in the state of North Dakota.
  • Maintain the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and membership in ASHA OR be in the process of completing the required clinical fellowship year which is a partial requirement for obtaining the CCC, if employee is located in a facility where they will be supervising students.
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) required within 30 days of hire.
Educational Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology, as evidenced by licensure.
Experience Requirements:
  • Satisfactory performance in the practices of Speech Language Pathology at prior worksites and/or various clinical sites during the academic years of training.

Physical Requirements:

The Speech Therapist frequently stands, sits, walks, bends, and reaches while conducting evaluations and treatment sessions in a variety of patient care environments. The role may require assisting with patient positioning, supporting mobility during swallowing or communication tasks, and transporting therapy materials or equipment. Adequate vision, hearing, and fine motor coordination are essential for assessing patient responses, performing therapeutic procedures, and completing detailed documentation.

Environmental Requirements:

This position works across multiple care settings, including inpatient units, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation areas, and patient homes. The therapist may be exposed to patients with diverse medical conditions and must adhere to infection-prevention practices, universal precautions, and safety guidelines at all times. The work environment may involve moderate noise, variable pacing, and frequent transitions between locations, requiring adaptability and strong organizational skills.
