Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Speech Pathologist (SP) Clinical Consultant functions as a licensed speech-language pathologist, providing comprehensive patient care including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation to promote patient health. This role involves evaluating and developing therapy plans for a broad range of diagnoses and acuities on an outpatient basis. As an experienced therapist, the SP Clinical Consultant educates patients and their families, collaborates with healthcare professionals for problem resolution and goal achievement, and contributes to the development of best practices and process improvements.

Refer to departmental "Scope of Service" and "Provision of Care" plans for primary age groups and populations served.

  • Provide consultative speech-language services, assessing patient function across diagnoses and complexities.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to colleagues, sharing best practices.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop and implement individualized care and treatment plans based on evaluations.
  • Educate patients and families on therapy techniques for continued progress outside the clinic.
  • Refer patients to physicians when additional medical evaluation or procedures are necessary.
  • Assist in improving patient satisfaction scores through service excellence.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Monitor patient progress, modify treatment plans as needed, and recognize complications.
  • Lead practice improvements and contribute to protocol development for specific populations.
  • Model advanced assessment and documentation skills, contributing to safety standards.
  • Manage workload effectively to meet quality and safety targets.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Accurately document patient education and procedures, ensuring timely record-keeping and billing.
  • Prioritize tasks efficiently, assisting with related administrative duties as needed.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Utilize research to inform treatment planning and stay updated on advances affecting patient care.
  • Seek opportunities for specialization and professional development, maintaining an ongoing development plan.

Qualifications
EDUCATION
  • Graduate of an approved education program for the required credentials.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of three years as a Speech Language Pathologist.
License/Certification
REQUIRED
  • SLP - State Licensure within 90 days or
  • SLP-Temp - Temporary State Licensure within 90 days or
  • ASHA-CCC-SLP - Certification in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
  • KSA/ Supplemental Data
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    • Demonstrate necessary skills and competencies, with ongoing assessments.
    • Proficiency in English for effective communication, especially regarding safety.
    • Effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
    • Ability to work independently, handle challenging cases, and exercise sound judgment.
    • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills.
    • Proficient in computer systems and clinical equipment.
    • Maintain professional competence in evaluating and treating complex patient populations.

    SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    WORK ATTIRE

    • Scrubs, Business professional, Other (department approved)

    ON-CALL

    • Not required, but may be necessary during emergencies.

    TRAVEL

    • No travel required within or outside Houston Metropolitan area.
