Speech & Language Teacher (NY) St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf

Location: 1000 Hutchinson River Parkway, Bronx, NY 10465
(10-month position) Hours: 8:30 – 3:00; extended day on Thursday (4:00 pm). Lunch: 50 minutes / 25 minutes when on duty. Follows Educational Calendar.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate students’ growth in auditory receptive skills, speech reading, speech production, and receptive/expressive language. Develop various communication strategies to enable effective interaction based on linguistic environment.
- Administer and interpret assessments including: structure and function of oral mechanism, functional auditory skills, phonetic/phonologic speech production, speech reading skills, receptive/expressive language.
- Plan and implement individualized auditory, speech, and language plans based on assessment findings, including auditory training, development of speech features, oral motor therapy, speech reading, and language development. Support bilingual and bi-modal instruction (English/ASL) tailored to student needs. Integrate curriculum content with speech, auditory, and language goals.
- Maintain daily records for IEP documentation, Medicaid session notes, and progress reports such as annual and triennial reviews.
- Manage amplification devices: troubleshoot FM classroom hearing aids and personal hearing aids, and educate students on their care and use.
RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Consult with teachers and parents regarding student progress and communication goals.
- Collaborate with audiologists to explore and implement enrichment programs and devices.
- Refer students for evaluations (dental, otological, psychological, neurological).
- Participate in interdisciplinary conferences and implement recommendations.
- Evaluate students for annual and triennial reviews.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA or BS in Speech Pathology/Audiology (preferred)
- MA or MS in Speech Pathology/Audiology and/or NYS Certification in Speech and Hearing Handicapped, or Clinical Fellowship Candidate (CFY)
- TSHH and TSLD Certificates
- Knowledge of deafness, sign language, behavior management, and multiple disabilities
- Membership in professional organizations (preferred)
- Willingness to attend NYSED Medicaid training seminars

- Good rapport with children
- Effective communication skills
