Job description

Job Purpose

The Speech Language Pathologist role is to evaluate and treat residents and patients with temporary or long-term speech, hearing, swallowing, and cognitive disabilities in compliance with state and federal guidelines. Any position that has direct patient care is considered to be safety sensitive by Avem Health Partners’ standards.

Essential Functions
  • Administers a variety of patient care and special procedures utilizing unique skills/training to this department.
  • Evaluates and diagnoses speech/language deficits by reviewing patient’s history and utilizing a variety of testing procedures.
  • Develops treatment plans designed to meet individual needs of patients and schedules treatment times.
  • Provides direct therapy to individuals according to the established treatment plan and revises treatment plans as patient needs require.
  • Documents progress and patient performance in accordance with department policy.
  • Communicate with patients to evaluate their levels of speech or language difficulty.
  • Determine the extent of communication problems by having a patient complete basic reading and vocalizing tasks or by giving standardized tests.
  • Identify treatment options.
  • Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan.
  • Teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices.
  • Work with patients to improve their ability to read and write correctly.
  • Work with patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow.
  • Counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication disorders.
  • Communicates with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates, and regularly re-evaluates the needs of the client; initiates, develops, implements and makes necessary revisions of the client's plan of care.
  • Ensure all safety and infection control practices are followed.
  • Ability to think quickly and competently in stressful situations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

Education/Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited school of Speech Pathology; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years clinical experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure
  • Current Oklahoma license for Speech Language Pathology (SLP).
  • Current BLS (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
Experience
  • Five (5) years of full-time speech therapy work.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
