Job Description

A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is Licensed professional who is responsible for providing medically prescribed speech therapy services to patients. SLPs provide evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders and speech and language problems resulting from strokes, head injury, respiratory issues, and other medical complications. SLPs work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Manager of Rehabilitation Services

Primary Job Function

Upon referral, evaluates a patient to determine problems and goals of each patient in cooperation with physician. Collaborate and support plan of care as determined by the physician and healthcare team. Provide treatments accordingly. Performs periodic re-evaluation of the patient as necessary, adjusts the patient’s plan of care as needed. Coordinate and assist with care as indicated. Interprets and communicates evaluation findings and treatment program to patients, family, and other team members. Supervises Rehabilitation Aides and students when concerning patient care. Perform evaluation and treatment of cognitive-communication disorders including problems organizing thoughts, paying attention, remembering, planning, and/or problem-solving. Perform evaluation and treatment of feeding and swallowing difficulties, which may follow an illness, surgery, stroke, or injury. Maintains patient records that reflect patient treatment: (Evaluation, daily treatment record, physician update, patient care plan updates, discharge summaries, telephone orders, billing). Clinical knowledge and skill, or ability to develop knowledge and skills required for evaluation and treatment of adult and geriatric patient populations. Ability to travel between facilities or other treatment locations as necessary. Responsible for performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge, and permitted by the policies and procedures of the organization, and other local, state, and federal guidelines. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds/meetings and in-services as needed. Performs other position-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • Current Texas State License in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Current BLS/CPR certification
  • Knowledge of evaluation and treatment of speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders
  • Strong clinical documentation and communication skills
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in acute care and outpatient rehabilitation setting
  • Experience with dysphagia management, including instrumental assessments (MBS)
  • Experience with head and neck cancer, lymphedema, or voice therapy
