Job description

Riverside University Health System

is currently seeking Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to join the teams at both the main Medical Center and the Outpatient Medical-Surgical Center in Moreno Valley, CA. The current openings are Per-Diem with the potential for full-time hours/more flexible scheduling, and have a 5/40 schedule, with rotating weekends and holidays.

The Speech-Language Pathologist - Per Diem is responsible for providing speech-language pathology treatments to care for patient disabilities, injuries, and diseases through functional activity training such as exercises for cognition, dysphasia, speech, and language disorders.

Per Diem personnel are distinguished from regular employees in that they receive additional compensation in lieu of County fringe benefits, and work assignments may be on a flexible work hour schedule.

  1. Assess the functional status of the patient through the use of objective evaluation techniques, based on standardized assessments for adult and pediatric dysphasia, cognition, and speech and language.
  2. Establish short and long term treatment goals in conjunction with the patient and the physician.
  3. Administer active, passive, and resistive therapeutic exercises to improve coordination and mobility for swallowing and speech.
  4. Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding home exercise programs and safety with functional activities.
  5. Provide assessment, instruction, and application of prosthetics for laryngectomee patients.
  6. Educate patients in proper techniques for swallowing and aspiration precautions.
  7. Recommend use of appropriate and suitable assistive devices for communication.
  8. Observe patients' response and progress in treatment while reassessing goals.
  9. Complete appropriate daily documentation in the medical record regarding patients' response to treatment and progress.
  10. Complete Medicare, Medi-Cal, and managed care documentation for treatment authorizations.
  11. Provide oversight of daily speech-language pathology treatment schedule.
  12. Participate in interdisciplinary conferences.
  13. Participate in the creation of new assessment forms on speech-related topics.
  14. Assist in writing speech-related policies and procedures and in maintaining the environment of care.
  15. Provide in-service education to nursing and medical staff on speech-related topics.
  16. Deliver in-service education to department staff on various therapy-related topics.
  17. Participate in the development and implementation of the interdisciplinary treatment planning.
  18. Maintain age-specific competencies of populations ranging in age from neonate through geriatric.
  19. Serve as clinical instructor for speech pathology interns.
  20. Assume supervision of Medical Therapy Unit Aide and Clinical Fellows.

Knowledge of: The principles and methods of assessment of function and treatment planning in speech pathology for dysphasia, cognition, speech, and language; familiarity with objective of speech pathology treatment; related therapeutic disciplines, physical and occupational therapy and their objectives; familiarity with neuromuscular function and dysfunction; kinesiology, human development, and of the associated modalities.

Ability to: Perform therapeutic techniques with regard to dysphasia, cognition, and speech and language; educate patients, families, and staff regarding speech pathology treatments.

Experience: One year of supervised experience as a licensed speech-language pathologist. One year of experience in an acute care setting as a licensed speech-language pathologist is desirable.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid license as a Speech-Language Pathologist issued by the Speech-Language Board of California. Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association may be required depending on the assignment.
