Job summary

Johnston Public Schools in Johnston, Rhode Island invites a Speech-Language Pathologist to join as a long-term substitute at Johnston Elementary School. You will evaluate and support students with speech and language needs under the Dir of Special Services, aligning with IEPs and RtI processes.

The ideal candidate holds RI licensure as an SLP, demonstrates collaboration with families and school staff, and can integrate current technology into therapy and assessments while prioritizing student

  • Knowledge of diagnosing speech and language delays and disorders; developing IEPs; providing therapy.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, and other school professionals.
  • Knowledge of the special education eligibility process and RtI.
  • Be organized, flexible and prepared.
  • Understand autism and challenging behavior or social/emotional issues and use effective strategies.
  • Use current technology in service delivery and practice.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in Evaluation Team process (screening referrals, reviewing data, sharing information and making recommendations).
  • Perform screenings as needed.
  • Perform speech and language evaluations (initial evaluations, periodic re-evaluations, exit evaluations).
  • Work cooperatively with teachers, parents and other professionals for development of appropriate educational plans.
  • Consult/collaborate with teachers and parents as necessary to optimize speech and language functioning.
  • Provide speech and language services to address the communicative needs of individual students as delineated in IEPs.
  • Provide speech and language services as part of RtI to general education students.
  • Clinical supervision of other SLPs as necessary to meet ASHA guidelines, with adjustment of other duties.
  • Appropriate billing procedures.
  • Consult with professionals and/or attending professional development on current topics, i.e. apraxia and motor development, new technology devices and augmentative communication.
  • Using data to monitor progress for IEP goals or RtI.
  • Working collaboratively within the curriculum and literacy frameworks.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director of Special Services.

JOB DESCRIPTION

I.Qualifications

The SLP must:

  • 1.Possess a valid Rhode Island certification as a Speech Language Pathologist.
  • 2.Have knowledge of and experience in diagnosing speech and language delays and disorders, developing individual education plans, providing speech and language therapy services.
  • 3.Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, and other school professionals.
  • 4.Have knowledge of the special education eligibility process and RtI.

II.Supervisor

The immediate supervisor of the SLP shall be the Director of Special Services.

III.Compensation

The compensation of the SLP shall be as per terms of the contract between the Federation and the School Committee.

IV.Duties and Responsibilities

The SLP shall be responsible for:

  • 1.Participating in the Evaluation Team process (screening referrals, reviewing data, sharing information and making recommendations).

  • 11.Using data to monitor progress for IEP goals or RtI.

V.Materials and Work Space

  • 1.All necessary supplies for implementing the duties and responsibilities of said SLP.
  • 2.Space and conditions conducive to privacy of assessments/consultations and delivery of therapeutic services.
